On April 7, the Catholic parishes of All Saints and St. Mary-St. Anthony in Kanas City, Kansas, came together to observe a holy day on the Christian calendar.
That afternoon, the parishes held a shared Stations of the Cross ceremony (also known as Via Crucis) in observance of Good Friday, a commemoration of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. The route began at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of All Saints Parish, located at 811 Vermont Ave., and culminated at St. Mary-St. Anthony Parish, located at 615 N. Seventh 7th St.
The event was made possible through the Rev. Pedro Jaramillo, the pastor of both parishes, who decided to unite the two communities with one representation of the Passion of Jesus Christ. Maricarmen Avila, who directed the event, said the ceremony was organized by a group of volunteers from both parishes.
Preparation for the ceremony took about two months, including rehearsals, costume fittings, character assignments and spiritual activities, Avila said.
“This activity of the Via Crucis has been expanding, and that’s a good thing,” she said. “Now, having more resources and more possibilities to share, to expand this activity, is definitely something that motivates me and many of us.”
In addition to the Via Crucis, two spiritual activities were held to deepen observers’ connection to the Passion. There was a special Mass, along with a liturgical time for observers to reflect on Jesus’ seven words on the cross.
“We also encouraged them to offer some works that could help them on the spiritual side, like doing works of mercy, preparing more deeply on the spiritual part, offering their Masses, rosaries or doing some charitable acts,” Avila said. “We are all volunteers and highly encouraged to give meaning to the commitment, because this performance, as in many other activities, does involve a lot of commitment, responsibility and sacrifice.”
When asked about her favorite moments during the Stations of the Cross, Avila shared that Mary’s encounter with her son and the scene where Jesus is taken down from the cross and handed over to his mother were the most emotional for her because she’s a mother and because of the empathy she feels for Mary at seeing her son treated unjustly.
Avila has participated in the Via Crucis ceremony since 2015, except for 2020, when she couldn’t because of the COVID pandemic. She said each ceremony has been different and brought new challenges.
Uniting the two parishes helped make this year’s ceremony unique. Avila said the experience was a breakthrough that allowed the parishes to share and expand the activity and deepen people’s appreciation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, leaving in the participants and spectators a deep impression of gratitude for Jesus’ sacrifice and his act of love.
“A big thank you to our priest and our church,” she said. “To our priest for trusting us. … Also, a special acknowledgment to the people who were part of the core group – the scenery manager, the stage manager, the person in charge of costumes, the people in charge of traffic order and first aid, and those supporting the intercession through their prayers. There were definitely many hands, but above all, many hearts that made this representation possible.”

“Muchas gracias a nuestro sacerdote y a nuestra iglesia”, dijo. “A nuestro sacerdote por confiar en nosotros. …
