The celebration of Dia de los Muertos is set to begin.
To help observe the upcoming annual holiday, generally observed Nov. 1-2, the Kansas City Museum will host its 10th annual Dia de los Muertos celebration 5-9 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 21). The museum is located at 3218 Gladstone Blvd. in Kansas City, Missouri’s Northeast area.
According to Paul Gutierrez, museum director of visitor experience and public programming, the celebration promises to be a night filled with history, tradition and festivities that people won’t want to miss.
“We are thrilled to be hosting this celebration for the past 10 years and highlighting this amazing culture,” Gutierrez said. “It aligns with our mission and vision. Thank you, Kansas City, for your continued support.”
Multiple area organizations are partnering with the museum to stage the event, which will explore Mexico’s history and cultural traditions. They include the Mattie Rhodes Art Center, Crossroads Hotel, TICO Productions, Stone Lion Puppet Theatre, Giselle’s Bridal KC, Mi Mercado Fresh Market, Artists Craftsman KC and La Mega KC Radio.
Mariachi Estrella KC will provide musical entertainment. In addition, the Stone Lion Puppet Theatre will provide puppetry performances, and Grupo Folklorico Izcalli will present dance performances.
For young visitors, there’ll be free face painting by artists Jessica Manco, Kathryn Messick and the Van Horn High School Art Department on the first floor. Kids also can enjoy take-home arts and crafts, courtesy of the Mattie Rhodes Art Center, Artists Craftsman KC, Mexican Consulate and the museum.
In addition, there will be displays of community altars, where visitors can place items to honor and remember loved ones who’ve passed away. Moreover, people will have the opportunity to buy Dia de los Muertos items at the museum gift shop, and local vendors will offer products ranging from clothing to crafts.
Products for sale also will include food and beverages, provided by various food trucks, including La Hamburgesa Local, Snow & Roast, the Sugar Skull Mexican food truck, Sancho Streetside, PH Coffee and YOLI Tortillas. Outside food and drinks will not be permitted.
Admission is pay what you like. Tickets are available online at Eventbrite.com. Tickets also are available through going to the upcoming programs and events link on the museum website, where visitors will be redirected to buy their tickets.
Museo de Kansas City organizará decima celebración del Día de los Muertos
La celebración del Día de los Muertos está a punto de comenzar.
Para ayudar a observar el próximo feriado anual, que generalmente se celebra del 1 al 2 de noviembre, el Museo de Kansas City organizará su décima celebración anual del Día de los Muertos de 5 a 9 p.m. este sábado (21 de octubre). Además, la gente tendrá la oportunidad de comprar artículos del Día de los Muertos en la tienda de regalos del museo, y los vendedores locales ofrecerán productos que van desde ropa hasta artesanías.
