Some Kansas City Chiefs fans might’ve wondered if Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was playing Santa Claus Monday afternoon (Dec. 25).
During the second quarter of the Chiefs’ 20-14 Christmas Day loss to Las Vegas at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Mahomes was involved in two turnovers that some fans might’ve considered gifts to the visiting Raiders. The reason? They resulted in back-to-back Las Vegas touchdowns.
The first was a fumble resulting from botched handoff Mahomes was taking from running back Isaiah Pacheco on an attempt to run a trick play. Raiders defensive lineman Bilal Nichols recovered the football and returned the fumble 8 yards for the score with 4 minutes, 55 seconds remaining.
Nichols’ scoop-and-score play helped him secure the Nickmas MVP Award from Nickelodeon – one of the media outlets that televised and/or video streamed the AFC West Division meeting. Viewers elected him for the honor with 35 percent of the vote.
“It’s a blessing,” Nichols told interviewer Dylan Schefter. “I mean, it means everything to me. … It wouldn’t be possible without my teammates. Every day, we come in, we work hard, we push each other. … I owe this all to them, man. This is as much their award as it is mine.”
Seconds after the scoop and score, Mahomes threw an interception that Raiders cornerback Jack Jones returned for a 33-yard score. Later, Jones drew flak on social media for apparently pranking a young fan by appearing to give the boy the football Jones had returned for the pick six, then quickly pulling it away from the youngster. However, the English newspaper The Daily Mail reported online that Jones had withdrawn the football because a grownup was trying to grab it, too, reposting a tweet from Jones on X (formerly Twitter) about the incident.
Nichols suggested his touchdown and Jones’ touchdown were no gifts, but rather, the result of the Raiders’ work ethic and mindset.
“All week, we preached, ‘Get after the ball. Be (a) ballhawk. Do anything you can to get the ball – anything you can to win this game,’ man,” he told Schefter. “And we did that. … I can’t find the words to tell you how proud I am of my teammates.”
Mahomes addressed the miscues during his postgame press conference.
“Two mistakes that gave them two touchdowns there. … When you’re backed up in their red zone, … you just can’t do that, especially when a defense is playing like they’re playing. … I’ve just got to be better in that sense and not (be) making those mistakes,” he told reporters.
Mahomes will get to test his ability to avoid “making those mistakes” Sunday, when the Chiefs (9-6) host Cincinnati (8-7) to close 2023. The Chiefs last faced the Bengals in January, winning 23-20 at Arrowhead for the AFC title en route to winning their second Super Bowl in four seasons.
