Kansas City coach Andy Reid and his Chiefs can thank Harrison Butker in part for the Chiefs winning their eighth straight AFC West Division title.
The veteran placekicker helped the Chiefs secure the title by booting six field goals during their 25-17 victory over Cincinnati Sunday (Dec. 31) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. As was pointed out by Jim Nance, who announced the CBS telecast of the pro football clash with analyst Tony Romo, Butker was the only person to score during roughly the final two hours of real time.
It was Butker’s first time to kick six field goals in one game, he told reporters.
Overall, Butker accounted for 19 of Kansas City’s points. In addition to the 18 points from his field goals, he booted an extra point after quarterback Patrick Mahomes II’s 8-yard, first-quarter TD pass to running back Isaiah Pacheco.
When asked by one reporter if he had ever singlehandedly outscored a team, Butker replied: “I don’t know. I’ve had five field goals before. Six was the first time. But yeah, (it) might be the first time.”
Butker was prepared to make that many field goals, he suggested.
“Going into any game, … I say, ‘O.K., there’s going to be 10 possessions and there’s going to be an extra point or field goal every possession,’” he said. “So I get my mind ready for a lot of kicks, whether … (I) get that many kicks or not.”
Reid was among the folks impressed by Butker’s feat.
“Six field goals, that was incredible – and these just weren’t little chip shots,” he told reporters. “I mean, these were … real field goals.”
Those “real field goals” helped Kansas City overcome a 17-7 first-half deficit. Butker’s first, a 54-yarder, cut Cincinnati’s lead to 17-10 with 3 minutes, 44 seconds left in the second quarter. He then booted a 43-yarder with 35 seconds left in the second quarter.
Butker’s 27-yarder with 3:41 left in the third quarter made it a one-point ballgame. His 24-yarder made it 19-17 Chiefs with 14:09 left in the fourth quarter. He added a 48-yarder with 6:18 remaining and a 46-yarder with 2:59 remaining.
“Harrison Butker, he saved us, man,” Mahomes told reporters.
In helping the Chiefs (10-6) clinch their division, Butker also helped Kansas City secure an AFC playoff berth. A win this Sunday (Jan. 7) against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium and a loss by Miami to Buffalo would get them the second seed in the seven-team, single-elimination postseason tournament.
