For the first time in his pro football career, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes II will have to travel for an AFC playoff game.
Mahomes and his fellow Chiefs will play Buffalo this Sunday (Jan. 21) at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. The second-seeded Bills (12-6), who defeated Kansas City 20-17 during the regular season, helped set up the meeting in the second round of the single-elimination postseason tournament by defeating Pittsburgh 31-17 Monday (Jan. 15) at Highmark. Buffalo and Pittsburgh were originally scheduled to play Sunday (Jan. 14), but it was postponed because of the winter storm that has hit much of the United States.
The third-seeded Chiefs (also 12-6) advanced to meet Buffalo by thumping Miami 26-7 Jan. 13 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in a game considered among the coldest ever in the history of the NFL, the parent league for the AFC. Officially, the gametime temperature was -4 Fahrenheit, with a -27 wind chill.
Mahomes touched on the weather during his postgame interview with Kaylee Hartung, sideline reporter for “Sunday Night Football,” the TV program that carried the ballgame live on the Peacock streaming service.
“We knew it was going to be cold,” he said. “But all week, we were preaching, ‘Let’s come in … (here) with that fire and just get after it and see what happens.’”
What happened was that the Chiefs got a spark in their passing attack from Rashee Rice – or “the young buck,” as Mahomes called him while talking to Hartung, with Rice standing beside him. The rookie wide receiver caught eight passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. As Hartung pointed out, that was a postseason record for Chiefs rookies.
“(We) weren’t too much worried about the weather. … We love the game, we love to win, so that’s what we came here to do,” Rice said.
If the Chiefs win Sunday night, they will then play the winner between Baltimore and Houston for the AFC title. The AFC champion will then play the NFC champion in February in Nevada in the Super Bowl – the NFL’s championship game.
Buffalo isn’t looking past Kansas City, quarterback Josh Allen suggested in his locker room speech to his fellow Bills after their victory over Pittsburgh.
“We’re taking it one game at a time,” Allen said. “That’s it.”
