Kansas City’s hopes of winning a second straight Super Bowl title are still alive – thanks in part to a missed field goal and a Latino running back.
The Chiefs kept their quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions alive Sunday night (Jan. 21) by escaping with a road win over Buffalo. Facing fourth-and-9 at the Kansas City 26-yard line with 1 minute, 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter of the AFC playoff meeting at Highmark Stadium and trailing Kansas City 27-24, Buffalo attempted a 44-yard field goal.
Kicker Tyler Bass’ attempt to tie it and perhaps force overtime sailed wide right.
Taking over at their own 34 after the miss, the Chiefs gave the football to Isaiah Pacheco on back-to-back running plays. The Latino’s first carry went for 8 yards. His second went for 3 yards, giving the Chiefs a first down.
With the first down and the Bills out of timeouts, quarterback Patrick Mahomes II took a knee on three straight plays to run out the clock and seal Kansas City’s three-point victory.
“All-time classic,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid told reporters during his postgame press conference.
By holding off Buffalo (12-7), the Chiefs (13-6) advanced to play Baltimore this Sunday (Jan. 28) at M&T Bank Stadium for the AFC title. The winner will play the NFC champion in Super Bowl LVIII Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium.
Tracy Wolfson – sideline reporter for CBS Sports, which aired Buffalo vs. Kansas City live on television – asked Mahomes for his thoughts about playing Baltimore.
“There’s no weakness there,” the signal-caller replied. “It’s going to take our best effort. Defense, offense, special teams – they do it all. It’s always a great challenge, and that stadium’s going to be rocking. So we’re excited for the challenge.”
Baltimore (14-4) helped secured the meeting by pounding Houston 34-10 Jan. 20 at M&T Bank Stadium. As was pointed out during the radio broadcast of the Ravens’ 24-point win, this Sunday will mark the first time in 53 years that an AFC title game has been played in Baltimore. On Jan. 3, 1971, the then-Baltimore Colts defeated the then-Oakland Raiders 27-17 at Memorial Stadium. The Colts went on to defeat Dallas in Super Bowl V on a last-second field goal.
“We’re excited about that,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters minutes after the Houston victory. “And our fans are going to get the chance to cheer as loud or louder than they did in this game – and they were amazing.”
The Ravens, who were established in 1996 following the relocation of the original incarnation of the Cleveland Browns, are seeking their third trip to the Super Bowl, the NFL’s annual championship game. They’re also seeking their third Super Bowl title, having won Super Bowls XXXV and XLVII.
The Chiefs, who are making their sixth straight AFC title game appearance, are seeking their sixth Super Bowl appearance overall and fourth in five seasons. They’re seeking their fourth Super Bowl title, having won Super Bowls IV, LIV and LVII.
