Commentary by Chara
Anyone who knew Dos Mundos founder Clara Reyes knew how her presence lit up the hearts of people who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her existence was a living testimony of love, kindness and commitment for justice for the Greater Kansas City area’s Latino community. As this issue of Dos Mundos goes to press, many people are mourning her departure. She died Feb. 17 at age 86 (see related story).
Clara radiated optimism and joy that touched the lives of those around her. Her smile was always comforting and provided a lift.
But Clara also was strong and persistent. She was a true fighter.
Clara had a determination and commitment to support people’s rights. A passionate advocate for the Latino community, she was always ready to raise her voice against injustice and inequality. That’s why she founded the area’s first bilingual newspaper — to give a voice to Latinos and provide them with information they needed to know.
Clara also attended many community gatherings, infusing hope and strength into those around her. Her optimism and faith in the power of change that the Latino community could bring to the area left an indelible mark that will never be forgotten.
Clara’s legacy will continue in the lives of people she touched. Physically, she will not be here with us. Her spirit, however, will always live among us.
We at Dos Mundos remember Clara as an extraordinary individual and as an iconic symbol of Kansas City. We will always think of her when we gather and continue her love and commitment to the well-being of the community.
Clara became the mentor to many of us in journalism who got to share our professional careers with her. She also was a believer who always trusted the people she loved.
Members of the Dos Mundos staff, many of whom called her Senora (Señora in Spanish) Clara or Dona (Doña in Spanish) Clara, join in mourning her departure with their comments below.
Farewell, Clara. May your light shine eternally.
“Clara Reyes is my mother and my compass of inspiration. I believe the strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us, but those who win battles we know nothing about. My mom embodied this silent resilience.
“Her determination was a lighthouse, standing unwaveringly against life’s challenges, teaching me that strength isn’t about how loudly one declares victory, but how quietly one perseveres through adversity.
“Through her actions, my mother instilled in me the sacred value of integrity. She epitomized honesty and moral uprightness throughout her life, teaching me to hold these virtues in high regard. Compassion was another cornerstone of her legacy; she lived not just for herself, but also with sincere empathy and kindness toward others. The lessons in humility and grace she provided form an intrinsic part of my moral fabric.
“Possessing an infectious zest for life, my mother’s example showed me that to live is not merely to exist, but to savor every moment with passion and joy. It wasn’t so much about what we did but how we did it — with laughter, enthusiasm, and a sense of adventure and with those who are important to us.
“In the face of adversity, my mother was a pillar of strength, her objectivity a key in her business ventures. Her unwavering support was the foundation that helped me build my dreams and aspirations. She demonstrated that being supportive encourages others to pursue their path, even if it diverges from one’s expectations.
“My mother taught me the magic of taking a thought and weaving it into reality. Her tireless spirit in actualizing her vision taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and the tangible joy of creating something from the ground up.
“Never one to be affected by limitations, my mother nudged me — sometimes gently, other times with a firm persistence — to explore beyond the comfortable. She knew that growth sprouts from the soil of challenge, and thanks to her, I learned to stretch my limitations and gain confidence.
“My mother was a true community leader, never shying away from our responsibility to contribute to our society. Her commitment to doing what was right for our community was more than a lesson; it was a calling, a moral imperative that she whispered into the wind, and I heard with clarity and conviction.”

“Mrs. Clara Reyes was always the representation of what a true matriarch means. Since I met her, I had a very good impression, and I realized that she was a strong woman with a very strong personality.
“Over the years, I realized that she was a legitimate person, and she was always concerned about supporting the Hispanic community, which is something that always inspired me to continue my work with more strength, respect and dedication. She always treated me like someone else in her family, but when it was necessary to be harsh, she never stopped giving her opinion, which was always appreciated because that was the best way to learn and improve my work.
“Mrs. Clara is an inspiration of fight, triumph and a lot of dedication without leaving aside her beautiful family that has always treated me as part of the family. The departure of Mrs. Clara Reyes has been like losing a loving grandmother. She always treated me like a grandson. I hope that she is happy next to her beloved Manuel Reyes. See you both at some point.”

“Saying goodbye is not easy — and even more so when there is so much love involved. Clara Reyes was a woman who changed many lives, helped so many people, and that is why today we say goodbye with an immense pain in our hearts.

Recordando a Clara Reyes: Un legado de inspiración, amor y compromiso
Cualquiera que haya conocido a Clara Reyes, fundadora de Dos Mundos, sabía que su presencia iluminaba los corazones de las personas que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla.
Su existencia era un testimonio vivo de amor, bondad y compromiso por la justicia para la comunidad latina del área metropolitana de Kansas City. Al momento de imprimir este número de Dos Mundos, muchas personas están de luto por su partida. Murió el 17 de febrero a los 86 años (ver artículo relacionado).
Clara irradiaba optimismo alegría que tocó la vida de quienes la rodeaban. Su sonrisa siempre fue reconfortante y animadora.
Pero Clara también era fuerte y persistente. Era una verdadera luchadora.
Clara tenía la determinación y el compromiso de apoyar los derechos de las personas. Apasionada defensora de la comunidad latina, siempre estuvo dispuesta a alzar su voz contra la injusticia y la desigualdad. Por eso fundó el primer periódico bilingüe del área: para dar voz a los latinos y brindarles la información que necesitaban.
Clara también asistía a muchas reuniones comunitarias, infundiendo esperanza y fortaleza a quienes la rodeaban. Su optimismo y fe en el poder de cambio que la comunidad latina podría traer al área dejaron una huella imborrable que nunca será olvidada.
Su legado continuará en las vidas de las personas que tocó. Físicamente, ella no estará aquí con nosotros. Su espíritu, sin embargo, vivirá siempre entre nosotros.
En Dos Mundos recordamos a Clara como una persona extraordinaria y como un símbolo icónico de Kansas City. Siempre pensaremos en ella cuando nos reunamos y continuemos con su amor y compromiso con el bienestar de la comunidad.

“Clara Reyes es mi madre y mi brújula de inspiración. Creo que las personas más fuertes no son las que muestran fuerza frente a nosotros, sino las que ganan batallas de las que no sabemos nada. Mi mamá encarnó esta resiliencia silenciosa.
“Su determinación fue un faro, resistiendo inquebrantablemente los desafíos de la vida, enseñándome que la fuerza no se trata de cuán ruidosamente uno declara la victoria, sino cuán silenciosamente uno persevera a través de la adversidad.
“A través de sus acciones, mi madre me inculcó el valor sagrado de la integridad. Ella personificó la honestidad y la rectitud moral a lo largo de su vida, enseñándome a tener en alta estima estas virtudes. La compasión fue otra piedra angular de su legado; vivió no sólo para sí misma, sino también con sincera empatía y bondad hacia los demás. Las lecciones de humildad y gracia que ella me brindó forman parte intrínseca de mi tejido moral.
“Con un entusiasmo contagioso por la vida, el ejemplo de mi madre me mostró que vivir no es simplemente existir, sino saborear cada momento con pasión y alegría. No se trataba tanto de lo que hicimos sino de cómo lo hicimos: con risas, entusiasmo y sentido de la aventura y con aquellos que son importantes para nosotros.
“Ante la adversidad, mi madre fue un pilar de fortaleza, su objetividad una clave en sus emprendimientos comerciales. Su apoyo inquebrantable fue la base que me ayudó a construir mis sueños y aspiraciones. Demostró que brindar apoyo anima a los demás a seguir su camino, incluso si difiere de las expectativas de uno.
“Mi madre me enseñó la magia de tomar un pensamiento y convertirlo en realidad. Su espíritu incansable para hacer realidad su visión me enseñó lecciones invaluables sobre la perseverancia y la alegría tangible de crear algo desde cero.
“Mi madre, que nunca se ha visto afectada por las limitaciones, me empujaba (a veces con suavidad, otras con firme persistencia) a explorar más allá de lo cómodo. Ella sabía que el crecimiento brota del suelo del desafío y, gracias a ella, aprendí a superar mis limitaciones y ganar confianza.
“Mi madre era una verdadera líder comunitaria y nunca rehuyó nuestra responsabilidad de contribuir a nuestra sociedad. Su compromiso de hacer lo correcto para nuestra comunidad fue más que una lección; fue un llamado, un imperativo moral que ella susurró al viento y yo escuché con claridad y convicción”.

“La señora Clara Reyes fue siempre la representación de lo que significa una verdadera matriarca. Desde que la conocí tuve muy buena impresión y me di cuenta de que era una mujer fuerte y con una personalidad muy fuerte.
“Con el paso de los años me di cuenta de que ella era una persona legítima y siempre estuvo preocupada por apoyar a la comunidad hispana, lo cual es algo que siempre me inspiró a continuar mi trabajo con más fuerza, respeto y dedicación. Ella siempre me trató como a alguien más de su familia, pero cuando era necesario ser dura, nunca dejaba de dar su opinión, la cual siempre era de agradecer porque era la mejor manera de aprender y mejorar mi trabajo.
“La señora Clara es una inspiración de lucha, triunfo y mucha dedicación sin dejar de lado a su hermosa familia que siempre me ha tratado como parte de la familia. La partida de la señora Clara Reyes ha sido como perder a una amorosa abuela. Ella siempre me trató como a un nieto. Espero que sea feliz al lado de su querido Manuel Reyes. Nos vemos a ambos en algún momento”.

“Siempre estaré agradecida de haber tenido la oportunidad no sólo de trabajar para y con la señora Clara, sino también de conocerla. Fue un privilegio que no doy por sentado. Le apasionaban Dos Mundos y la comunidad hispana de Kansas City, y se notaba cada vez que hablaba con ella. Siempre la recordaré llegando a la oficina con una gran sonrisa en el rostro.
“Ella también era muy querida en la comunidad. Muchas veces, cuando entrevisté a alguien, terminaron hablando de lo maravillosa que era o le enviaron saludos. Todas las personas con las que hablé siempre hablaron con cariño de ella. Me hizo sentir más orgullosa de trabajar en el periódico por el que tanto luchó la señora Clara.

“La Señora Clara siempre estará en el centro y corazón de la comunidad. Con su valentía y personalidad única, construyó un pilar para la comunidad latina, siempre pensando en cómo podría ayudar a su gente. Una persona especial que puede irse con la satisfacción de haber impactado la vida de muchas personas.
“Como alguien cuya vida fue impactada por la señora Clara, sé de primera mano la diferencia que su esfuerzo podría hacer, y admiro este ícono de una mujer mexicana, que dio todo lo que tenía para construir un hermoso proyecto. Ahora, nos quedan esos recuerdos que nos servirán de fuente de inspiración para seguir su ejemplo y buscar impactar la vida de quienes nos rodean.
