In June, a suburban school district in Kansas offered an initiative designed to provide literacy and engaging activities to some migrant students.
From June 12 to 30, Olathe Public Schools provided the Migrant Education Summer Program for two age groups: prekindergarten through the fifth grade and grades 6-12. The younger students received a weekly literacy activity kit containing age-appropriate materials and books for enhancing their reading skills. According to Erik Erazo, district executive director of student and community engagement, the Migrant Education Department delivered the kits to the students’ homes.
Older students were offered the chance to participate in activities at The Spot. Located in the Johnson County Youth and Family Services building, The Spot offered after-school programs on Tuesdays during the school year. Students in grades 6-12 participated in various activities, including sports at the outdoor recreation center, creative activities and reading.
Enrollment in the program was exclusive to migrant students through Olathe Public Schools. Students were only required to be officially registered as migrant students.
According to Erazo, the district’s migrant education team offered continuous support to the students and their families. That support included providing school supplies, connecting families and students with local resources, and facilitating communication within the district.

En junio, un distrito escolar suburbano en Kansas ofreció una iniciativa diseñada para brindar alfabetización y actividades atractivas a algunos estudiantes migrantes.
Del 12 al 30 de junio, las Escuelas Públicas de Olathe ofrecieron el Programa de Verano de Educación para Migrantes para dos grupos de edad: desde prejardín de infantes hasta quinto grado y grados 6-12. Los estudiantes más jóvenes recibieron un kit de actividades de alfabetización semanal que contenía materiales y libros apropiados para su edad para mejorar sus habilidades de lectura. Según Erik Erazo, director ejecutivo de participación estudiantil y comunitaria del distrito, el Departamento de Educación Migrante entregó los kits a los hogares de los estudiantes.
A los estudiantes mayores se les ofreció la oportunidad de participar en actividades en The Spot. Ubicado en el edificio de Servicios para la Familia y la Juventud del Condado de Johnson, The Spot ofreció programas extracurriculares los martes durante el año escolar. Los estudiantes en los grados 6-12 participaron en varias actividades, incluyendo deportes en el centro recreativo al aire libre, actividades creativas y lectura.
La inscripción en el programa fue exclusiva para estudiantes migrantes a través de las Escuelas Públicas de Olathe. Los estudiantes sólo debían estar registrados oficialmente como estudiantes migrantes.
Según Erazo, el equipo de educación migrante del distrito ofreció apoyo continuo a los estudiantes y sus familias. Ese apoyo incluyó dar útiles escolares, conectar a familias y estudiantes con recursos locales y facilitar la comunicación dentro del distrito.
