Something has arrived in the art world that’s changing how people are creating art: artificial intelligence (AI).
And some artists aren’t fans of it.
AI is computer technology used for various types of problem-solving, including art-related problems like image creation. By being commanded to look for specific figures and colors, for example, it can create digital paintings.
The use of AI in art is a concern to Kansas City area artists and Dos Mundos employees Luis Merlo and Hector Perez.
“AI is strange because, in seconds, it can create tons of work,” said Merlo, a Shawnee, Kansas, resident. “You can instruct the software to create the style of some famous artist, and it does so. I’m not sure if it can really be considered art if it’s not made by a person. A machine cannot have creativity, so AI creates images, not art. It can’t be compared to the art created by a person.”
Perez considers AI-generated art dangerous because it devalues human-created art.
“I don’t like it,” he said. “For us (artists), (it already) is a challenge to sell our art, and now with the arrival of AI, it is harder for us. It is dangerous because a lot of people are having a different appreciation of what art means.”
In addition to the issues expressed by Merlo and Perez regarding originality and the effects on artists’ income, others have expressed concerns about issues such as copyright ownership and AI’s technical limitations. Still, other artists claim that AI can be useful, if it’s combined with human creativity.
“I just think it is a tool and we should not create (a) dependency on it,” said an artist from Kansas City, Missouri, on the condition of anonymity. “If we work with it, we can create something bigger and develop our creativity in a different way.”

Además de las cuestiones expresadas por Merlo y Pérez con respecto a la originalidad y los efectos en los ingresos de los artistas, otros han expresado preocupaciones sobre cuestiones como la propiedad de los derechos de autor y las limitaciones técnicas de la IA. Aun así, otros artistas afirman que la IA puede ser útil si se combina con la creatividad humana.
“Simplemente creo que es una herramienta y no deberíamos crear una dependencia de ella”, dijo un artista de Kansas City, Missouri, bajo condición de anonimato. “Si trabajamos con ello, podemos crear algo más grande y desarrollar nuestra creatividad de una manera diferente”.
