A Hispanic organization has created a fund to help immigrants in the Greater Kansas City area.
Recently, the Latinx Education Collaborative (LEC) launched the Adelante Fund, an initiative that provides immediate financial support to area immigrant families facing urgent needs. Edgar J. Palacios, LEC founder, said those needs include three main areas: legal support for immigration cases, housing assistance, and food and basic needs.
“Let’s say there’s an application that needs to be filed for a U visa or if there’s a bond that needs to be filed, that would be a good opportunity to use the fund,” Palacios explained. “What we can contribute may not be the entire need; and so, we’re also collecting data on what the actual needs are, so we can be better poised to fundraise and better poised to connect people to other resources that exist within our community.”
The fund is available to immigrants who reside on either the Kansas or Missouri side of the Greater Kansas City area. Types of immigrants to whom priority is given include undocumented individuals, asylum seekers, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients and newly arrived immigrants. Priority also is given to individuals who can demonstrate an urgent financial need “due to economic hardship, legal challenges or lack of access to other forms of aid,” according to the fund’s website.
Palacios said the funds are coming from operational dollars from the LAC and individual donors. The goal for this first year of the fund is to raise and distribute $50,000, he said.
“We are seeing that people aren’t able to work; people are missing out their rent, close to eviction,” he said. “People are hungry, and I think that those needs are not going to go away any time soon; and depending on whatever policies that we see ahead of us from the government level, these needs might continue to get worse. And so, $50,000 this year would be a small drop in the bucket to what the actual needs are for our community.”

Palacios is grateful for the reception the fund has had from donors and partner organizations.
“The community has really stepped up in support of this work, and so I’m really just excited to see that,” he said. “And I hope we can continue to grow it and continue to rely on the community to support our neighbors.”

Una organización hispana ha creado un fondo para ayudar a los inmigrantes en el área metropolitana de Kansas City.
Recientemente, el Latinx Education Collaborative (LEC) lanzó el Fondo Adelante, una iniciativa que brinda apoyo financiero inmediato a las familias inmigrantes del área que enfrentan necesidades urgentes. Edgar J. Palacios, fundador de LEC, dijo que esas necesidades incluyen tres áreas principales: apoyo legal para casos de inmigración, asistencia para la vivienda y alimentos y necesidades básicas.
“Digamos que hay una solicitud que se debe presentar para una visa U o si hay una fianza que se debe presentar, esa sería una buena oportunidad para usar el fondo”, explicó Palacios. “Lo que podemos aportar puede no ser la totalidad de las necesidades; por lo tanto, también estamos recopilando datos sobre cuáles son las necesidades reales, para poder estar mejor preparados para recaudar fondos y conectar a las personas con otros recursos que existen dentro de nuestra comunidad”.
El fondo está disponible para inmigrantes que residen en el área metropolitana de Kansas City, ya sea en Kansas o Missouri. Se da prioridad a inmigrantes indocumentados, solicitantes de asilo, beneficiarios de la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) e inmigrantes recién llegados. Deben demostrar una necesidad financiera urgente “debido a dificultades económicas, problemas legales o falta de acceso a otras formas de ayuda”, según el sitio web del fondo.
Palacios explicó que los fondos provienen de fondos operativos del LAC y de donantes individuales. El objetivo para este primer año del fondo es recaudar y distribuir $50,000, afirmó.
“Estamos viendo que la gente no puede trabajar; no pueden pagar el alquiler y están al borde del desalojo”, dijo. “La gente tiene hambre, y creo que esas necesidades no desaparecerán pronto; y dependiendo de las políticas gubernamentales que veamos, estas necesidades podrían seguir empeorando. Así que, $50,000 este año serían solo una pequeña gota en el océano para las necesidades reales de nuestra comunidad”.
