Jenny Mendez to receive award for long-lasting work in the arts
For years, Jenny Mendez has been a leader in the Hispanic community.
Mendez’s work at the Mattie Rhodes Center as the cultural arts director has been fundamental to expanding the community of Hispanic artists that grace the Greater Kansas City area. That work will be recognized during the first Viva La Chicana Awards on April 10, when Mendez will receive the Icono Cultural Award.
The Icono Cultural Award “recognizes individuals whose art programming has become a cornerstone of the community, shaping culture, inspiring generations and preserving our rich heritage,” according to the official announcement of the award.
“Jenny’s visionary leadership, tireless dedication and creative brilliance embody everything this award represents,” the announcement read.
“I feel honored and humbled by it,” she said. “I appreciate giving those opportunities to be able to be seen by others, so I really appreciate that.”
Mendez sees the awards ceremony as a way to honor and highlight the work Chicanas are doing in the Hispanic community.
“You need to be able to give light to it because, a lot of times, people don’t even know,” she said. “If we can continue to reflect on the things that women have done to create these amazing bridges and opportunities and resources and knowledge to (the) community. … It’s like we have to continue that work and stick together and be able to acknowledge the people that are really taking those big strides.”
Mendez started working at Mattie Rhodes as an art instructor in 1996. Her duties as a director include anything from after-school and youth programs to overseeing the cultural center and art gallery. Through that work, Mendez has helped give a voice and space to artists, with an emphasis on Latino artists.
“We’re very inclusive about keeping the doors open to anyone, including young artists, up-and-coming artists, artists that are showing in other galleries, to regional and even national and even international artists throughout the years,” she said.
For Mendez, the work in the arts is essential to building a community and welcoming new arrivals to the area.
“When they find out about us and they walk into our space, one of the first things that they say is, ‘Oh, my God, I’m home. I was looking for a place like you,’” she recalled.
Mendez has some advice for younger people, whether they’re interested in working in the arts or not: take every opportunity that comes at you.
“And if opportunities aren’t coming at you, well, you better go find them because they’re there,” she said. “You just have to ask.”

Durante años, Jenny Méndez ha sido una líder en la comunidad hispana.
Su trabajo en el Centro Mattie Rhodes como directora de artes culturales ha sido fundamental para expandir la comunidad de artistas hispanos que adornan el área metropolitana de Kansas City. Ese trabajo será reconocido durante la primera edición de los Premios Viva La Chicana el 10 de abril, cuando Méndez recibirá el Premio al Icono Cultural.
El premio al Icono Cultural “reconoce a individuos cuya programación artística se ha convertido en una piedra angular de la comunidad, dando forma a la cultura, inspirando generaciones y preservando nuestra rica herencia”, según el anuncio oficial del premio.
“El liderazgo visionario de Jenny, su incansable dedicación y su brillantez creativa encarnan todo lo que representa este premio”, se lee en el anuncio.
“Me siento honrada y humilde por ello”, dijo. “Aprecio dar esas oportunidades de poder ser vista por otros, así que realmente lo aprecio”.
Méndez ve la ceremonia de premios como una forma de honrar y resaltar el trabajo que las chicanas están haciendo en la comunidad hispana.
“Hay que poder dar luz a esto porque, muchas veces, la gente ni siquiera lo sabe”, dijo. “Si podemos seguir reflexionando sobre las cosas que las mujeres han hecho para crear estos increíbles puentes, oportunidades, recursos y conocimientos para (la) comunidad… Es como si tuviéramos que continuar ese trabajo y mantenernos unidos y poder reconocer a las personas que realmente están dando esos grandes pasos”.
Méndez comenzó a trabajar en Mattie Rhodes como instructora de arte en 1996. Sus deberes como directora incluyen todo, desde programas extraescolares y para jóvenes hasta supervisar el centro cultural y la galería de arte. A través de ese trabajo, Méndez ha ayudado a dar voz y espacio a los artistas, con énfasis en los artistas latinos.
“Somos muy inclusivos y mantenemos las puertas abiertas a todos, incluidos los artistas jóvenes, los artistas emergentes, los artistas que exponen en otras galerías, los artistas regionales e incluso nacionales e internacionales a lo largo de los años”, dijo.
Para Méndez, el trabajo en las artes es esencial para construir una comunidad y dar la bienvenida a los recién llegados a la zona.
“Cuando se enteran de nuestra existencia y entran en nuestro espacio, una de las primeras cosas que dicen es: ‘Dios mío, estoy en casa. Estaba buscando un lugar como este”, recuerda.
Méndez tiene un consejo para los jóvenes, ya sea que estén interesados en trabajar en las artes o no: aprovechen todas las oportunidades que se les presenten.
“Y si las oportunidades no se les presentan, bueno, es mejor que las busquen porque están ahí”, dijo. “Solo tienen que preguntar”.
