On the morning of Feb. 6, a Black Lives Matter activist was shot and killed.
Muhiyidin Moye (a.k.a., Muhiyidin d’Baha), 32, spent years fighting for racial equality as an activist and protester. Originally from New York, Moye lived in the Charleston, S.C., area, where he became known for his appearance in a police tape showing him trying to snatch a Confederate battle flag from a demonstrator. He was in New Orleans when he was killed.
Around 1 a.m. on Feb. 6, the police responded to a 911 call about gunfire and found Moye bleeding. He had been shot in the leg and was found near a bike. According to The New York Times, authorities reported they followed a two-block trail of blood that led them back to a bullet fragment.
The New Orleans Police Department, which is handling the investigation, didn’t release information about whether any suspect had been identified.
Upon hearing the news, members of the Black Lives Matter movement in Charleston gathered outside of North Charleston City Hall, where Moye had given speeches in the days following the death of Walter Scott, a black man, by a North Charleston police officer.
Some civil rights activists might interpret Moye’s death as reflecting New Orleans’ struggles to address violent crime and racism. New Orleans has one of America’s highest murder rates, with 157 murders reported in 2017. And despite the city’s efforts to examine and fix its racism-related issues, there are still three prominent Confederate monuments scattered around the Louisiana metropolis.
