A nonprofit in Wyandotte County is helping those affected by the recent storms in Kansas City, Kansas.
As of Monday (Aug. 24), approximately 1,200 residents in Kansas City, Kansas, were without power, as reported by Greater Kansas City area media outlets such as KSHB-TV (Channel 41). The nonprofit Justice for Wyandotte is organizing volunteers and helping the residents with cleanup.
According to Edgar Galicia, who has led and organized the efforts, the work is still extensive.
“A lot of people are still needing immediate help, especially those still without power; and sometimes to fix that, there needs to be cleanup first, and that cleanup falls on the house owner or renter,” Galicia said. “Some people don’t have the means to do this cleanup, so that’s where we come in – we go and help them.”
Galicia said just on Sunday (Aug. 23) there were 15 groups of five people and each group helped about 12 houses.
“There’s still a lot of work to do,” he said.
Volunteers work from 9 or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, including Saturdays and Sundays. Those interested can go to McNewton Outreach Center, 2100 N. 13th St. in Kansas City, Kansas. That’s the main hub. From there, groups go to the assigned houses for the day, Galicia said.
“You can come and volunteer whatever hours you want – one hour, five hours, whatever you can,” he said. “Everything helps.”

Una organización sin fines de lucro del condado de Wyandotte está ayudando a los afectados por las recientes tormentas en Kansas City, Kansas.

Galicia comentó que tan solo el domingo (23 de agosto) hubo 15 grupos de cinco personas y que cada grupo ayudó en unas 12 viviendas.
“Todavía queda mucho trabajo por hacer”, dijo.
Los voluntarios trabajan de 9 o 10 de la mañana a 4 de la tarde todos los días, incluidos sábados y domingos. Los interesados pueden acudir al McNewton Outreach Center, ubicado en el 2100 N. 13th St. en Kansas City, Kansas; este es el centro de operaciones principal.
