Andre Reyes Jr. and Antonio Reyes grew up surrounded by music.
The brothers are fourth-generation musicians, with their great-grandfather, grandfather and father also playing music. This inevitably turned them into musicians, too.
“We always grew up with instruments in the house, and so whether we were at our grandparents’ house or our parents’ house, we always had instruments available and within reach,” recalled Antonio Reyes.
That familiarity led to them forming multiple bands together. They are members of Stranded in the City, a Greater Kansas City area powerhouse band that offers a melting pot of genres, including rhythm and blues, funk, country, Tex-Mex, rock and pop. The brothers are also known for their offstage work, donating their time to many events and staying involved in the community.
The brothers are featured in the upcoming “We Are Latinos V” Kansas City PBS documentary series, which spotlights the work of individuals whose lives and work continue to make a lasting impact on the area’s culture, as described on the official website.
For Andre Reyes, being approached by documentary director Victor Antillanca to participate in the series was “an honor.”
“They really highlight the community very well and a lot of people who are making an impact and a difference, … so for us, it was an honor to be asked to represent our community,” he said.
Their love for music and the history of their family are the main topics they will discuss in the documentary. Andre Reyes anticipates people will learn more about where they come from and their journey.
“I think a lot of people know who we are, but I don’t think they realize how far our family has come in terms of the history we’ve left or the things that we do,” he said. “I think it will be nice for people to get a deeper insight as to who our family is and what it represents for us and our community and the things we’ve done and continue to do.”
Kansas City PBS will host a drive-in screening and discussion of “We Are Latinos V” on Oct. 22 at the Boulevard Drive-in Theatre in Kansas City, Kansas (KCK). The event is free, but RSVP is required.
The brothers invite the community to attend the event and/or watch it once it’s available online.
“We would like to invite people out to experience ‘We Are Latinos V’ and to learn more about our history and the legacy that we continue to carry for our family,” said Andre Reyes. “We’re just honored to be a part of it, and we’re grateful and thankful to everybody that has supported us as we continue to grow, as we continue to leave a legacy for our family and the KCK community.”
