El martes 17 de noviembre, Rainy Day Books llevó a cabo una conversación con la famosa escritora chilena Isabel Allende.
Allende, quien está en tour promocionando su nuevo libro “Un Amante Japonés,” se sentó con Vivien Jennings, presidente de Rainy Day Books, para hablar sobre temas relacionados a su trabajo, experiencias de su vida e influencias. El evento de una hora tomo lugar en Unity Temple en Plaza, Kansas City, Mo., y fans del área asistieron- incluyendo estudiantes de universidades cercanas.
“Ellas es una de mis escritoras favoritas,” dijo Melissa Davis quien atendió al evento. “Yo también soy de Chile y estaba muy emocionada cuando supe que venia. Mis libros favoritos son ‘Paula’ y ‘La Casa de los Espíritus’ pero definitivamente estoy ansiosa en ver que leeré en este nuevo libro.”
Usando su elegancia y humor, Allende hablo sobre momentos especiales en su vida incluyendo el año que recibió su ciudadanía americana y el año en que perdió a su hija Paula.
“Fue el año en que mi hija se enfermo,” dijo. “El juez Anderson hizo una ceremonia privada para recibir mi ciudadanía. Fue una ceremonia conmovedora-… y le dije ‘voy a hacer lo mejor para comprobar que lo merezco (la ciudadanía) y le devolveré a este país.’ Así que cuando recibí la Medalla de Libertad, le mande una carta y una foto con la medalla. Y me escribió ‘yo se, te he seguido estos años.’”
Allende también hablo acerca de temas de mujeres y de su fundación por la cual “espera ayudar a organizaciones sin animo de lucro en Chile y California cuyas misiones son ayudar a mujeres y niños vulnerables para darles derechos, salud, educación, y protección de la violencia.”

Chilean writer visits KCMO

On Tuesday (Nov. 17), Rainy Day Books hosted a conversation with renowned Chilean writer Isabel Allende.
Allende, who is on tour promoting her new book “The Japanese Lover,” sat down with Vivien Jennings, Rainy Day Books president, to discuss topics related to her work, life experiences and influences. The hour-long event took place at Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City, Mo., and drew fans from the Kansas City area assisted, including college students from nearby universities.
“She is one of my favourite writers,” attendee Melissa Davis said. “I am from Chile and I was excited to hear she was coming. My favorite … (books are) ‘Paula’ and ‘House of the Spirits,’ but I’m definitely looking forward to … (seeing) what this new book brings.”
Using elegance and humor, Allende discussed special moments from her life, including the year she received her American citizenship and the year she lost her daughter Paula.
“It was the year that my daughter was ill,” she said. “Judge Anderson did a private ceremony for my citizenship. It was a very moving ceremony – … and I said to him, ‘I’m going to do my best to prove that I deserve it (citizenship) and I will give back to this country.’ So when I got the Medal of Freedom, I sent him a letter and a picture with the medal. And he wrote me back and said, ‘I know. I had followed you over the years.’ ”
Allende also discussed women’s issues and her foundation, through which she intends to “support non-profits in Chile and California whose missions are to provide vulnerable women and children with access to reproductive rights, healthcare, education and protection from violence.”
