El pasado sábado, con las computadoras afuera y entrega de pizza en la Galería de Arte del Centro Mattie Rhodes, Latinos of Tomorrow (LOTs), una organización académica activa para latinos y otros en Kansas City, organizó un taller para la Solicitud de Ayuda Federal Gratuita para Estudiantes (FAFSA).
Un grupo de estudiantes en su mayoría de preparatoria se presentaron para recibir orientación sobre la solicitud de ayuda financiera para estudiantes universitarios, la cual es aparentemente desalentadora.
Kathy Bryant, asesora académica en el TRIO- Centro de Oportunidades Educativas de la Universidad de Kansas, estaba a su disposición para apoyar con la solicitud federal.
Bryant indicó que parte de su papel y la de su organización en relación a los estudiantes universitarios está en “tratar de hacerles entender que hay dinero para ayudarlos, si son de bajos ingresos y de primera generación”.
Clara Hernández, presidente de LOTs, también estaba apoyando. Recientemente graduada del Colegio Comunitario del Condado de Johnson, Hernández planea postularse a la Escuela Farmacéutica de la Universidad de Missouri-Kansas City.
“Hacemos todo lo posible para contactar a los estudiantes -y especialmente a los padres que hablan español- para que se reunán con los demás estudiantes y aprendan lo que puedan”, indicó, describiendo LOTs.
Dentro de las otras personas que asistieron se encuentra Jullian Whisler, un estudiante de segundo año de Shawnee Mission North que quiere ser empresario y posiblemente estudiar ecología en la universidad.
“No puedo hacer mucho, porque soy un estudiante de segundo año y debes estar en tercero”, indicó Whisler. “Pero creo que sólo estoy experimentando la sensación, ¿sabes? Me refiero a que también quiero ir a la universidad. Quiero un futuro.
Para el estudiante de último año en Olathe North, Benjamín Fregoso, la tarde fue útil.
“Realmente me ayudó a llenar la FAFSA – me dio bastante orientación”, mencionó Fregoso.

Latinos of Tomorrow hosts FAFSA workshop

Laptops were out and the pizza delivered last Saturday at the Mattie Rhodes Center Art Gallery where the Latinos of Tomorrow (LOTs), an active academic organization for Latinos and others in Kansas City, hosted a workshop for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
A handful of mostly high school students showed up to receive guidance on the seemingly daunting application that can result in financial aid for college-bound students.
Kathy Bryant, academic advisor with the University of Kansas TRIO-Educational Opportunity Center, was on hand to provide her expertise with the federal form.
Bryant said that part of her and her organization’s role with college-bound students is “trying to get them to understand that there is money out there to help them, if they’re low-income, first generation.”
LOTs President Clara Hernandez was also on hand. A recent graduate of Johnson County Community College, Hernandez plans to apply to the University of Missouri—Kansas City School of Pharmacy.
“We do our best in reaching out to students – and especially the parents who are Spanish-speaking themselves – to join with the students and learn what they can,” she said, describing LOTs.
Others who attended included Jullian Whisler, a Shawnee Mission North sophomore who said he wants to be an entrepreneur and possibly study ecology in college.
“I can’t do much, because I’m a sophomore, and you have to be a junior,” Whisler said. “But I guess I’m just getting the feel of it, you know? I mean, I want to go to college too. I want a future.”
For Olathe North senior Benjamin Fregoso, the afternoon was useful.
“It really helped me filling out the FAFSA–(It) gave me a lot of guidance,” Fregoso said.
