“Black Dot” campaign helping abused men, women

By Paula Alzate

A new campaign designed to assist abused men and women is quickly gaining support.
Called the “Black Dot in Hand” campaign, the social media-oriented campaign has resulted in more than 6 million people supporting five physically abused women. The black dot works as a signal of abuse. It’s also a way to ask for help; anyone who meets someone with a black dot in her hand is asked to support the campaign by immediately calling the police. The black dot system allows a victim to alert others and take action without getting the aggressor’s attention.
According to a Chilean newspaper, the movement’s goal is to “recognize people who are victims of domestic violence or domestic abuse.”
Patricia Pereira, a Kansas City area resident, likes the campaign, but has some reservations about it.
“I think it’s a good idea,” Pereira said. “Some people who suffer (from domestic) violence are scared to tell others – and if they … (wear) the dot, they are not saying anything, but they (can) show that they are being abused. But people have to take it seriously because it can become a problem…. Anyone can put (on) a dot and call the police for nothing.”
