El 15 de abril, Oscar Monterroso perdió 55 pulgadas de cabello — y cuando el salió de The Gallery Event Space en Kansas City, Mo., sonreía y tenía la cabeza en alto.
Monterroso había donado su cabello largo a la causa Kansas City’s Shave 2 Save, en apoyo de la Sociedad Americana contra el Cáncer.
“Hace tiempo cuando empecé a crecer mi cabello [hace ocho años],” dijo Monterroso, presidente y director ejecutivo de Tico Productions LLC. “Mi novia, ahora esposa, me dijo ‘Cuando te vas a cortar tu cabello?’ Una de las conversaciones que tuvimos era que si alguna vez me corto mi pelo será para una buena causa.”
KC Shave 2 Save fue el mejor ajuste para Monterroso, quien dijo que las ganancias de la causa también se beneficia al ACS Hope Lodge – Kansas City. El Hope Lodge, como explicó Monterroso, es un lugar donde personas luchando con el cáncer, quien no tienen los fondos necesarios para pagar un hotel y viven lejos de la ciudad pueden permanecer mientras están recibiendo tratamiento con la quimioterapia y otros métodos.
“En el momento en que sales de la quimioterapia y tienes que manejar a casa por dos horas — es agotador!” dijo Monterroso. “Entonces la idea del Hope Lodge es que te puedes quedar ahí.”
Cuando era niño, Monterroso aprendió sobre la importancia de ayudar a los demás de sus padres, quienes eran misioneros de la Iglesia del Nazareno. Su propia historia familiar de Monterroso con el cáncer, incluyendo su madre quien luchó contra el cáncer de mama y su abuelo quien batalló con cáncer de próstata, fueron motivación para él a involucrarse en la lucha contra el cáncer.
“Siempre pensé que tenía que hacer algo para ayudar,” él dijo.
Monterroso urge a todos que se involucren en la lucha contra el cáncer, especialmente los hispanos. También anima a todos que se hagan un chequeo de salud.

Monterroso gives up his hair for a cause

On April 15, Oscar Monterroso lost 55 inches of hair — and when he exited The Gallery Event Space in Kansas City, Mo., he was smiling and had his head held high.
Monterroso had just donated his long locks to the Kansas City’s Shave 2 Save cause in support of the American Cancer Society (ACS).
“Way back when I started growing my hair [eight years ago],” said Monterroso, President CEO of Tico Productions LLC. “My girlfriend, now wife, said to me ‘When are you going to cut your hair?’ One of the conversations we had was if I ever cut my hair, it was going to be for a good cause.”
KC Shave 2 Save was the best fit for Monterroso, who stated that proceeds from the cause would also benefit the ACS Hope Lodge – Kansas City. The Hope Lodge, as Monterroso explained, is a place where individuals struggling with cancer, who don’t have the necessary funds to pay for hotels and live far from the city can stay while they are being treated with chemotherapy and other methods.
“By the time you get out of chemotherapy and you have to drive back home for two hours — it’s exhausting,” Monterroso said. “So the idea of the Hope Lodge is that you can stay there.”
Growing up, Monterroso learned about the importance of helping others from his parents, who were Church of the Nazarene missionaries. His own family’s history with cancer, including his mother’s struggle with breast cancer and his maternal grandfather’s battle with prostate cancer, were Monterroso’s motivation to get involved.
“I always thought I needed to do something to help,” he said.
Monterroso urges everyone to get involved in the fight against cancer, especially Hispanics. He also encourages everyone to get a health checkup.
