El sábado 9 de julio del 2016, la división Psi Sigma de la hermandad Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc en conjunto con la Fundación Educativa y Cultural Sigma Salutes entregó su tercera beca anual Carolyn A. Booker . Otorgada en el nombre del miembro de Cultured Pearl y fundadora de Kansas City Freedom School, cada año se entrega la beca Carolyn A. Booker a un estudiante de preparatoria merecedor que resida en el área metropolitana de Kansas City.
El ganador de la beca 2016 es Saally Campos, graduada de la preparatoria of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in Kansas City, KS. La señorita Campos sobresalió académicamente, con un promedio de 4.2 mientras y participó en varias organizaciones estudiantiles y actividades extracurriculares. Ella asistirá a la Universidad de Missouri en Kansas City y planea especializarse en ciencias computacionales. La señorita Campos, junto con su madre y hermana, asistieron a la ceremonia organizada por el comité de becas de Fundación Cultural y Educativa Sigma Salutes, y recibió la beca en un cheque por la cantidad de $1,000.
La beca lleva el nombre de Carolyn Ann Wilson Booker (fallecida), en memoria de su incansable trabajo como educadora de toda una vida en la comunidad de Kansas City.
Carolyn A. Booker tuvo un papel importante en el desarrollo de la iniciativa Freedom School (Escuela de libertad) en el área de Kansas City. En 1995, bajo el liderazgo de Carolyn A. Booker, se estableció la primera escuela Kansas City Freedom en la Iglesia Bautista Mount Pleasant Missionary. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Awards 2016 Carolyn A. Booker Scholarship
On Saturday, July 9, 2016, the Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., in conjunction with the Sigma Salutes Cultural and Educational Foundation awarded their third annual Carolyn A. Booker Scholarship. Awarded in the name of the Kansas City Freedom School founder and Cultured Pearl member, the Carolyn A. Booker scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving high school student residing in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The winner of the 2016 scholarship is Saally Campos, a 2016 graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in Kansas City, KS. Ms. Campos excelled academically, earning a 4.2 G.P.A. while involved in several student organizations and extracurricular activities. She will attend the University of Missouri at Kansas City and plans to major in computer science. Ms. Campos, along with her mother and sister, attended an awards ceremony hosted by the Sigma Salutes Cultural and Educational Foundation’s scholarship committee, and was presented with a scholarship check in the amount of $1000.00.
The scholarship is named after Carolyn Ann Wilson Booker (deceased), in memory of her tireless work as a lifelong educator in the Kansas City community. Soror Carolyn A. Booker played an integral role in the development of the Freedom School initiative in the Kansas City area. In 1995, under Carolyn A. Booker’s leadership, the first Kansas City Freedom School was established at the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. On May 23, 2005, she received the Kansas City Freedom School Initiative Pioneer Award, celebrating the naming of the Carolyn Booker Skill Development Institute at the Muriel Kaufman Foundation in her honor. Carolyn A. Booker retired from the Kansas City Missouri Public School District in 1996, and subsequently retired from the Kansas City Freedom School in 2010.
The Sigma Salutes Cultural and Educational Foundation is a non-profit 501c3 organization established in 2010, to promote the cultural competency and support the educational needs of area youth.
