Olathe Latino Coalition kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month events

By Melissa Arroyo
Olathe, Kan., is among the many U.S. communities with plans to observe Hispanic Heritage Month, which will begin on Thursday (Sept. 15) and conclude on Oct. 15.
On Sept. 6, Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland issued a proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month during the Olathe City Council meeting at City Hall. Starting this Thursday, several institutions in Olathe and the Olathe Latino Coalition will hold several events related to Hispanic Heritage Month for Olathe’s rapidly growing Hispanic community.
“Since the creation of the Olathe Latino Coalition, we have incorporated (into the celebration the) recognition of individuals or organizations in Olathe that are doing and providing outreach to the growing Hispanic population (in the city),” said Mary Lou Jaramillo, project director of the Olathe Latino Coalition.
According to Jaramillo, Olathe is the only city in Johnson County that celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month.
Since March, a planning committee that includes representatives from the Olathe Heritage Center, the Olathe Public Library, the school district and other institutions have met monthly at the library to decide what each institution would offer to the Hispanic community this year.
“The planning committee is diverse,” Jaramillo said. “(Olathe) institutions are trying to be more inclusive by inviting Hispanic organizations to their locations to provide entertainment, music, poetry.… It’s an overall inclusive experience – and to me, that makes the difference.”
This year, the celebratory activities will begin with a Latino art exhibit at the Johnson County Community College Olathe Health Education Center. Other activities will include a CPR and AED training course provided by the Olathe Fire Department in Spanish and a Latin American flag parade during Fourth Fridays.
Jaramillo said the events are designed to raise the awareness and develop the appreciation of Hispanic culture, and to “build bridges by sharing a common space.”
“The city has been very supportive,” Jaramillo said. “I am pleased with the communitywide support that I see in Olathe to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.”
