En los últimos años, los EE.UU. ha experimentado un significable aumento de inmigrantes centroamericanos quienes cruzan la frontera del sur. Los inmigrantes traen consigo cuentos horribles de violencia por parte de las pandillas, autoridades corruptas, pobreza y extorsión como forma de protección de las pandillas. Para aquellos que son capaces de escapar, el viaje a los Estados Unidos es largo y peligroso; muchos de ellos son secuestrados, violados, traficados o asesinados durante el viaje. Para aquellos que logran llegar a EE.UU., muchas veces son detenidos por las oficinas de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) que los colocan en grandes habitaciones (apodadas “Hieleras” debido a las altas temperaturas de frío). Después, las madres que viajan junto con sus hijos son trasladados a centros de detención para la familia. Las instalaciones lucen y funciona como una prisión; en donde en lugar de recibir una oportunidad legítima de asilo, muchos de los inmigrantes no representados son rechazados por no contar con una razón de “miedo creíble” que sea suficiente para los casos de asilo y son regresados a través de la frontera como una forma de expulsión inmediata.
En respuesta a las prácticas de estas instalaciones, la Asociación Americana de Abogados de Inmigración (AILA) se ha asociado con la Red Católica de Inmigración Legal (CLINIC), el Consejo de Inmigración Americana (AIC) y el Centro para la Educación y Servicios Legales para Refugiados e Inmigrantes (RAICES), para formar el Proyecto Pro Bono en Detención de familias (CARA). CARA cuenta con una amplia red de voluntarios que prestan servicios legales pro bono para ayudar a las familias detenidas. En la actualidad existe una fuerte necesidad de traductores de español para ayudar a los voluntarios legales de habla inglesa en la comunicación con los inmigrantes. Increase in central american immigrants
Over the past several years, the U.S. has experienced a sharp increase in Central American immigrants crossing the southern border. The immigrants bring with them horrid tales of gang violence, corrupt authorities, poverty, and extortion as a form of protection from the gangs. For those who are able to escape, the journey to the United States is long and dangerous; many are kidnapped, raped, trafficked, or killed during the journey. For those that do make it to the U.S., they are often detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and placed into large holding rooms (nicknamed “hieleras” because of the freezing temperatures of the rooms). From there, mothers and children that travel together are moved to family detention facilities. The facilities are prison-like in their appearance and function; rather than being offered a legitimate opportunity to seek asylum, many unrepresented immigrants are quickly dismissed as not having the required “credible fear” for asylum cases and returned across the border as a form of expedited removal.
In response to the practices of these facilities, American Immigration Lawyers Association has partnered with the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the American Immigration Council, and the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services to form the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project. CARA utilizes a wide network of volunteers to provide pro bono legal services to help the detained families. There is currently a strong need for Spanish language translators to assist English speaking legal volunteers in communicating with immigrants.
