*Su visita a Cuba: Fue la primera vez en más de 80 años que un Presidente estadounidense y la primera familia visitaron el país insular. President Obama’s final year in office filled with historic accomplishments

U.S. President Barack Obama’s eight years in the Oval Office were filled with major accomplishments. But some of his most historic achievements took place during his final year in office.
Here are some highlights from the final year of Obama’s presidency:
*His visit to Cuba: It was the first time in more than 80 years that a sitting U.S. president and the first family had visited the island country. During his visit, Obama restored diplomatic ties between the United States and Cuba. By contrast, previous sitting presidents had made little effort to improve U.S.-Cuban relations. In addition, soon after the president’s visit, U.S. airlines gained permission to fly to Cuba – a significant achievement.
*Signing and entering the U.S. formally into the Paris Agreement: This was a major acknowledgement of the global effort to combat climate change and collaborate with world leaders to take a step toward improving the environment. The Paris Agreement is officially one of the “most ambitious climate change agreements in history,” as the White House states. Chinese President Xi Jinping also entered into the agreement.
*His visit to Hiroshima, Japan: Obama was the first sitting president to visit Hiroshima since 1945, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb that wreaked havoc on the city. During this historic visit, Obama paid his respects on the United States’ behalf and called for the end of using nuclear weapons.
*He named the first national monument to LGBT rights: On June 24, the president designated the area around the Stonewall Inn in New York City as an official monument in honor of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. His gesture came a year after the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled 5-4 that same-sex marriage is constitutional.
Obama’s administration will end on Jan. 20, 2017, when the Donald Trump administration begins. Looking back on his presidency, it’s clear that Obama has left a significant legacy – even when his days in office were numbered.
