Ex jugador de fútbol soccer, combina la experiencia y la pasión en campaña.
Desde que era niño, Diego Gutiérrez ha sentido un compromiso hacia la educación -y está canalizando ese compromiso postulándose para un puesto en la Directiva de Educación de Lee’s Summit (Missouri).
Nacido en Colombia, Gutiérrez llegó a Estados Unidos con su familia “con la intención de adquirir una educación, utilizando mis talentos como jugador de fútbol soccer”, recordó recientemente.
“El sueño de mi madre para mí era tener un título universitario, así que migramos a Estados Unidos en 1990 para cumplir ese propósito. Después de estudiar una diplomatura, cumplí con mi propio sueño de convertirme en jugador profesional de fútbol soccer”.
Durante su etapa deportiva, Gutiérrez jugó con varios equipos, incluyendo Sporting Kansas City (anteriormente conocido como los Kansas City Wiz, luego los Kansas City Wizards), y Chicago Fire. Él también representó a Estados Unidos en juegos de fútbol internacionales.
Ahora como catedrático de la Universidad Rockhurst y que además está estudiando su doctorado en empresas, Gutiérrez vive en Lee’s Summit con su esposa Ginna y tres hijos. Como residente de Lee’s Summit, él piensa que el distrito escolar R-7 de Lee’s Summit está entre los mejores del estado. Pero él desea “hacer uso de mi talento y mi experiencia para elevar aún más el nivel de nuestro distrito “, dijo él.
“Aunque históricamente hemos sido uno de los mejores distritos en el estado, podemos hacerlo aún mejor, y quiero ayudar a dirigir ese crecimiento”, dijo Gutiérrez.
Si resulta electo, los planes de Gutiérrez para el distrito incluyen mejorar la comunicación dentro del distrito escolar y fortalecer el enlace entre la comunidad y el distrito. Gutiérrez piensa que su amor por la educación, el conocimiento de los niveles más altos del gobierno y su conocimiento en empresas lo distingue de los otros candidatos. Él considera su trabajo como catedrático también como una ventaja.
“Durante mi vida he sido exitoso en dirigir – en deportes, en empresas, y también a nivel nacional e internacional”, dijo Gutiérrez. “Enterarte de problemas y encontrar maneras para resolverlos es lo que mejor hago. Me gusta competir, mejorar y hacer mejor las cosas – y esta oportunidad de dar servicio en la directiva sería la oportunidad perfecta para ayudarnos a crecer como distrito y como comunidad”.

Gutierrez running for Lee’s Summit school board

Former soccer player combining experience and passion in campaign bid
Since childhood, Diego Gutierrez has felt a commitment toward education – and he’s channeling that commitment into running for a Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Board of Education seat.
Born in Colombia, Gutierrez came to the United States with his family, “with the intention of acquiring an education, using my talents as a soccer player,” he recalled recently.
“My mother’s dream for me was to have a college degree, so we migrated to the U.S. in 1990 in order to fulfill that purpose,” he said. “After putting myself through my undergraduate degree, I then fulfilled my own dream of becoming a professional soccer player.”
During his soccer, Gutierrez played for various teams, including Sporting Kansas City (formerly known as the Kansas City Wiz, then the Kansas City Wizards) and the Chicago Fire. He also represented the United States in international soccer.
Now a Rockhurst University professor who’s pursuing his doctorate in business, Gutierrez lives in Lee’s Summit with his wife Ginna and three children. As a Lee’s Summit resident, he believes the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District is among the state’s best. But he wants “to leverage my talent and my experience to elevate the bar for our district even higher,” he said.
“Although historically we’ve been one of the top districts in the state, we can do even better,” Gutierrez said. “And I want to help lead that growth.”
If elected, Gutierrez’s plans for the district include improving communication within the school district, and strengthening the bond between the community and the district. Gutierrez believes his love for education, knowledge of the highest levels of government and his business knowledge set him apart from the other candidates. He considers his work as a professor to be a plus, too.
“I have been successful in leading throughout my life – in athletics, in business, but also at the national and international level,” Gutierrez said. “Learning problems and finding ways to solve them is what I do best. I’m about competing, improving and making things better – and this opportunity to serve on our board would be the perfect opportunity to help us grow as a district and as a community.”
