Ivonne Gutiérrez no tenía planes para fundar su propia guardería.
Pero en junio del 2013, abrió una: Genesis Child Care & Home LLC.
“Bueno, tuve a mi hija en el programa Padres como Maestros (en Olathe, Kan.) – y acababa de terminar el programa que tenía hasta los 3 años de edad,” recordó Gutiérrez. “Se convirtió en una situación difícil … (determinar) quién podía cuidar (mi hija).”
Después del trabajo, Gutiérrez cuidaba otros niños. Esto hizo que Gutiérrez iniciara su propia guardería. Fue con la persona a cargo de “Padres como Maestros” en ese momento y expresó su interés en comenzar su negocio. Gutiérrez fue dirigida con alguien que la ayudaría a dar el primer paso hacia la posesión de Genesis.
El Corporativo Hispano de Desarrollo Económico ayudó a Gutiérrez a prepararse para cuidar niños ajenos con varias clases sobre el desarrollo infantil y cuidado de niños.
“Mi mente estaba en las nubes, por decir,” dijo Gutiérrez. “Una persona sabe cómo cuidar a sus propios hijos. Pero uno no sabe cómo educar adecuadamente a los hijos ajenos, enseñándoles rutinas y educación básica para cuando los niños … (vayan) en la escuela.”
Gutiérrez le da crédito a Isabel Gutiérrez, una educadora de “Padres como Maestros”, por ayudarla a obtener su licencia. Ayudó a Gutiérrez a practicar su inglés, le ayudó a registrar su negocio y desarrollar habilidades básicas de computación.
“Tuve que empezar desde cero y aprender todo”, dijo la empresaria. “Mi marido también fue una de las personas que más me ayudó – mi mamá y mi familia en general.”
La madre de Gutiérrez continúa ayudando, incluso con la preparación de comida para el centro y siendo su respaldo en caso de emergencias. Su mamá también les enseña a los niños matemáticas, literatura y números. Su esposo ayuda con el trabajo práctico alrededor de la casa y proporciona apoyo al centro.
Gutiérrez, que cuida a ocho niños en total, espera expandir el centro, con el objetivo de hacerlo a finales de este año.
El español es el idioma principal que se habla en el centro. Gutiérrez se enorgullece de eso.
“Los niños aprenden inglés muy rápido en la escuela, así que les enseñamos y hablamos en español para que los niños no olviden cómo hablarlo,” dijo ella.

Childcare owner striving to teach and care for area children

Ivonne Gutierrez had no plans for starting her own daycare center.
But in June 2013, she opened one: Genesis Child Care & Home LLC.
“Well, I had my daughter in the program Parents as Teachers (in Olathe, Kan.) – and she had just finished the program that was up to 3 years of age,” Gutierrez recalled. “It became a difficult situation … (determining) who could watch (my daughter).”
After work, Gutierrez would watch other children. That prompted Gutierrez to start her own childcare center. She went to the person in charge of Parents as Teachers at the time and expressed her interest in starting her business. Gutierrez was led to someone who would help her take the first step toward owning Genesis.
The Hispanic Economic Development Cop. helped prepare Gutierrez for watching others’ children with various classes on child development and childcare.
“My mind was in the clouds, so to speak,” Gutierrez said. “A person knows how to care for one’s own children. But one doesn’t know how to properly educate others’ children, teaching them routines and basic education for when the children … (go) on to school.”
Gutierrez credits Isabel Gutierrez, a parent educator in Parents as Teachers, with helping her get licensed. She helped Gutierrez practice her English, helped her register the business and develop basic computer skills.
“I had to start from zero and learn everything,” the entrepreneur stated. “My husband was also one of the people who helped me a lot – my mom and my family in general.”
Gutierrez’s mother continues to help her, including with meal preparation for the center and by being her backup in case of emergencies. Her mom also teaches the children math, literature and numbers. Her husband helps with the handy work around the home and provides support to the center.
Gutierrez, who cares for eight children overall, hopes to expand the center, with the goal of doing so later this year.
Spanish is the primary language spoken at center. Gutierrez takes great pride in that.
“Kids pick up English really fast in school, so we teach and speak in Spanish so that the children do not forget how to speak it,” she said.
