On May 25, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg received an honorary doctorate degree from Harvard University – and as part of his obligatory speech for Harvard’s commencement ceremony, Zuckerberg discussed how an undocumented student had inspired him.
Zuckerberg, who dropped out of Harvard to start the world’s most used social networking site and became a billionaire, met the student while he was teaching at a Boys & Girls Club chapter. The business mogul didn’t reveal the boy’s name during his speech because he didn’t want to put him at risk. However, he mentioned that the boy told him he couldn’t attend college, then talked about taking out the undocumented student for breakfast for his birthday.
“I wanted to get him a present, so I asked him,” Zuckerberg recalled during his speech, posted online at Harvard’s website. “And he started talking about students he saw struggling and said, ‘You know, I’d really just like a book on social justice.’ ”
“I was blown away,” Zuckerberg continued. “Here’s a young guy who has every reason to be cynical. He didn’t know if the country he calls home – the only one he’s known – would deny him his dream of going to college. But he wasn’t feeling sorry for himself. He wasn’t even thinking of himself. He has a greater sense of purpose, and he’s going to bring people along with him.”
Zuckerberg has gone on record as favoring immigration reform.
