A half-century ago this month, a young immigrant valiantly saved two lives. It cost him his own. In observance of the 50th anniversary of his selfless gallantry, Kansas Citians will celebrate his life at the school named for him on the city’s Westside. The public is invited to the Primitivo Garcia 50th Year Memorial on Saturday, Nov. 25 at Primitivo Garcia Elementary School.
“We want a big celebration,” said Garcia’s sister, Irene Mendez. “We’ve had enough of mourning Tivo. This will be a celebration of his life so people will know what a wonderful person he was, and his story will continue to inspire many generations to come.”
On the night of Nov. 15, 1967, Tivo and his older brother, Alfredo interrupted an assault on their teacher outside Westport High School. She lay helpless on the cold ground. A pack of teenaged thugs had brutally attacked the pregnant English language teacher as she waited for a ride after class. Her assailants ran when the brothers intervened, but not before shooting Tivo. After rallying in the hospital, Tivo unexpectedly died two weeks later.
Margaret Kindermann-Kelso, the teacher the brothers so bravely rescued, survived the attack. So did her unborn daughter, Marlo. Now living in California, Margaret is retired from teaching, but her daughter carries on. Marlo became a teacher. Sixteen years ago, she gave birth to a son. She named him Tivo.
Primitivo Garcia, 23, had only been in the country for nine months. He and his brother, Alfredo were the last of their eight surviving siblings to immigrate here from Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico seeking a better life. A gifted guitar player and talented mixed-media artist, Tivo promptly got a job as a shipping clerk and signed up for English language classes evenings at Westport High School.
“His main goal was to get a good education,” Mendez said. “It was very important to him; he wanted a career.”
She described her late brother as a gentleman, a happy person who loved art and music and was always singing. He possessed extraordinary courage, strength and compassion, and his heroic action to save his teacher was “totally in character.”
“He exemplified the very best of humanity,” Mendez said. “It was evident even when he was a young boy so we weren’t surprised at what he did. It’s like he was born to be a hero.”
The 50th Year Memorial combines a formal program with speakers and proclamations, photo exhibit, and reception and “comida” culminating in music and dance performances. Representatives from local, state and federal government and Mexican Consulate officials, along with Margaret Kindermann-Kelso and her daughter and grandson are among the special guests expected to remember Primitivo Garcia. Live entertainment will follow the formal 50th Year Memorial program, which begins at 11 a.m.

Donations are being accepted to help pay for the event and establish a college scholarship. Organizers have set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/primitivo-garcia-50th-year-memorial).
“The goal is to have a $5,000 scholarship in his name,” Mendez said.

Hace medio siglo, un joven inmigrante salvó dos vidas valientemente. Costándole la suya. En conmemoración del aniversario 50 de su desinteresada valentía, los habitantes de Kansas City celebrarán su vida en la escuela que lleva su nombre ubicada en el lado oeste de la ciudad. “Queremos una gran celebración,” indicó la hermana de García, Irene Méndez. “Ya hemos tenido suficiente luto por Tivo. Esta será una celebración de su vida, para que la gente sepa lo maravillosa que fue y su historia continuará inspirando a muchas generaciones por venir.”
En la noche del 15 de noviembre del 1967, Tivo y su hermano mayor Alfredo interrumpieron un asalto a su maestra fuera de la preparatoria Westport. Ella yacía indefensa en el frío suelo. Una manada de matones adolescentes había atacado brutalmente a la maestra de inglés embarazada mientras esperaba un aventón después de clase. Sus asaltantes corrieron cuando los hermanos intervinieron, pero no sin antes dispararle a Tivo. Después de recuperarse en el hospital, Tivo murió inesperadamente dos semanas después.
Margaret Kindermann-Kelso, la maestra que tan valientemente rescataron los hermanos, sobrevivió al ataque. También lo hizo su hija no nacida, Marlo. Que ahora vive en California, Margaret se retiró de la enseñanza, pero su hija continúa. Marlo se convirtió en maestra. Dieciséis años atrás, dio a luz a un hijo y lo llamó Tivo.
Primitivo García, de 23 años, sólo había estado en el país durante nueve meses. Él y su hermano Alfredo, fueron los últimos de sus ocho hermanos sobrevivientes que inmigraron aquí desde Camargo, Chihuahua en México, en busca de una vida mejor. Un talentoso guitarrista y artista de medios mixtos, Tivo rápidamente consiguió un trabajo como empleado de envíos y se inscribió en clases de inglés en la preparatoria Westport..
“Su principal objetivo era obtener una buena educación,” mencionó Méndez. “Fue muy importante para él, quería una carrera.”
Describió a su difunto hermano como un caballero, una persona feliz que amaba el arte, la música y siempre cantaba. Poseía una valentía, fuerza y compasión extraordinaria. Su acto heroico para salvar a su maestro fue una muestra “totalmente de carácter.”
«Él ejemplificó lo mejor de la humanidad,” dijo Méndez. “Fue evidente incluso cuando era un niño, así que no nos sorprendió lo que hizo. Es como si hubiera nacido para ser un héroe.”
El homenaje a los 50 años combina un programa formal con oradores y proclamaciones, exposición de fotografías, recepción y “comida” que culmina en actuaciones de música y baile. Representantes del gobierno local, estatal, federal y funcionarios del consulado mexicano junto con Margaret Kindermann-Kelso, su hija y su nieto se encuentran entre los invitados especiales que se espera recuerden a Primitivo García. El entretenimiento en vivo tendrá lugar después del programa formal del 50º aniversario, que comienza a las 11 a.m.
