This weekend (Feb. 16-18), Kansas City, Mo., will host the area’s largest comic expo – and a Latino celebrity will be part of it.
The expo is Planet Comicon KC 2018. It’ll take place at Bartle Hall, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, Mo. Actor Danny Trejo – who has frequently worked with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, appearing in such movies as “Desperado,” “Spy Kids” “Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” “Planet Terror” and “Machete” – will appear on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 17-18) to talk, sign autographs and take pictures with fans.
During a recent interview with Dos Mundos, Trejo discussed his upcoming visit.
Dos Mundos: Have you ever been in KC before? How do you feel about your upcoming visit?
Danny Trejo: We are gonna have so much fun in KC (laughs)! This is gonna be my first time in KC, and I (have) wanted to go since 1959. I can’t wait. My agent is coming with me and it is gonna be a lot of fun. I always have a lot of fun at Comicons, just because I get to be with my fans.
DM: How many Planet Comicons have you been (to)?
DT: Oh, my God! I probably go to two a year. I think Comicon is probably the best time because you get to be with your fans. It is not … (like) I’m eating dinner and someone wants an autograph. I’m not running to go to the airport. I’m there to be with my fans and it is a lot of fun.
DM: Any cool or fun experience at any Comicon that you have attended?
DT: Oh, God! I met Rachel McAdams, got to hang out with Salma Hayek. It is just that everybody is so glad to be there – and it is so much fun.
DM: Are you a comic fan?
DT: You know what? I’m an entertainment fan. I love any kind of entertainment. I love comic books, I like video games, I like TV.
DM: What’s your favorite superhero?
DT: Machete (laughs).
DM: Talking about Machete, what did it mean to you to bring him to life?
DT: Robert Rodriguez and … (I) started talking about Machete, like, 20 years ago. We were in Acuna (Acuña in Spanish), Mexico. He told me, “I have this character that I want you to do, Danny” – and we started talking about Machete. And it started (a) long time ago, and now it is a great franchise. Now, we are gonna do “Machete 3.”
DM: Do you think that you and Machete are similar?
DT: I think that’s one of the reasons why Robert chose me. First of all, there wasn’t a Latino superhero, so he said, “Let’s do this.” And we did this guy as a regular guy, a worker and … (someone who) knew that if he saw something wrong he was going to make it right. And that is Machete.
DM: What’s your favorite thing about Machete?
DT: He is there for the people.
DM: That relates to your personality. Before, you were a youth counselor – and now, you are a big Hollywood … (guy). Tell me about this transition.
DT: Nothing has changed. Right now, I have a full trunk in my car … of thermal underwear because me and my sister and Mario Castillo wanted to go and … (pass) on socks and thermal underwear to the homeless. If Hollywood changes you, you don’t belong here, because you have to be the real person. What I used to do before I became famous, I still do. My purpose in life is to help others. You have to help.
DM: Give me three words that describe Danny Trejo.
DT: Good, happy, father. I think I want to be a good … father more than anything.
DM: Invite people in KC to Planet Comicon.
DT: To all my friends in KC, I wanna see you. I want to talk to you. Let’s take a picture.

Durante una reciente entrevista con Dos Mundos, Trejo discutió su próxima visita.
Dos Mundos: ¿Alguna vez has estado en KC antes? ¿Cómo te sientes acerca de tu próxima visita?
Danny Trejo: ¡Nos divertiremos mucho en KC (ríe)! Esta va a ser mi primera vez en KC y he querido ir desde 1959. No puedo esperar. Mi agente vendrá conmigo y será muy divertido. Siempre me divierto mucho en los Comicons, porque puedo estar con mis fans.
DM: ¿A cuántos Planet Comicons has ido?
DT: ¡Oh, Dios mío! Probablemente voy a dos por año. Creo que Comicon es probablemente el mejor momento porque puedes estar con tus fans. No es como que voy a cenar y alguien quiere un autógrafo. No estoy corriendo para ir al aeropuerto. Estoy allí para estar con mis fans y es muy divertido.
DM: ¿Alguna experiencia genial o divertida en cualquier Comicon al que hayas asistido?
DT: ¡Oh, Dios! Conocí a Rachel McAdams y salí con Salma Hayek. Es solo que todos están tan contentos de estar allí y es muy divertido.
DM: ¿Eres un fanático de las historietas?
DT: ¿Sabes qué? Soy un fanático del entretenimiento. Adoro cualquier tipo de entretenimiento. Me encantan los cómics, me gustan los videojuegos, me gusta la televisión.
DM: ¿Cuál es tu superhéroe favorito?
DT: Machete (ríe).
DM: Hablando de Machete, ¿qué significó para ti darle vida?
DT: Robert Rodriguez y … yo comenzamos a hablar de Machete, como, hace 20 años. Estábamos en Acuña, México. Me dijo: “Tengo a este personaje que quiero que hagas, Danny”, y comenzamos a hablar de Machete. Comenzó hace mucho tiempo y ahora es una gran franquicia. De hecho, vamos a hacer “Machete 3”.
DM: ¿Crees que tú y Machete son similares?
DT: Creo que esa es una de las razones por las cuales Robert me eligió. Antes que nada, no había un superhéroe latino, entonces él dijo: “Hagámoslo”. Y lo hicimos como un tipo normal, un trabajador, alguien que sabía que si veía algo que estaba mal iba a cambiarlo para bien Y ese es Machete.
DM: ¿Cuál es tu cosa favorita de Machete?
DT: Él está ahí para la gente.
DM: Eso se relaciona con tu personalidad. Antes, eras un consejero juvenil, y ahora, eres un gran chico de Hollywood. Cuéntame acerca de esta transición.
DT: Nada ha cambiado. En este momento, tengo un baúl completo en mi auto de ropa térmica porque mi hermana y Mario Castillo quisimos ir a llevar calcetines y ropa térmica a las personas sin hogar. Si Hollywood te cambia, no perteneces aquí, porque tienes que ser una persona real. Lo que solía hacer antes de ser famoso, todavía lo hago. Mi propósito en la vida es ayudar a otros. Tienes que ayudar.
DM: Dame tres palabras que describan a Danny Trejo.
DT: Bueno, feliz y papá. Creo que quiero ser un buen papá… más que nada.
