Every year, millions of immigrants apply for U.S. citizenship. If you are interested in applying for citizenship, you need to make sure you qualify.
To qualify for U.S. citizenship, you should be a permanent resident and have a green card. In addition, you need to have resided in the United States for at least five years and be at least 18 years old. Moreover, you should demonstrate that you have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the five years immediately preceding your filing date.
To qualify for citizenship, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) – the government agency that determines eligibility – requires that applicants read, write and speak English, and have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and civics. Furthermore, applicants should be of good moral character and demonstrate their support of the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.
However, the English requirements are waived if you are age 50 or older and have lived in the United States as a permanent resident for 20 years. There also is a waiver if you are age 55 or older and have lived as a permanent resident in the United States for at least 15 years.
Once you know that you fulfill the requirements, look for an immigration clinic for assistance in filling out the citizenship application or hire an immigration lawyer. If you want to do it yourself, visit the USCIS website, uscis.gov.
Once you submit your application, you must attend a biometrics appointment, where the USCIS will take your fingerprints. Later, the USCIS will send you a letter to attend an interview, where you will be tested on U.S. history and civics. Make sure you are prepared to take the test.
After completing the interview and passing the test, a USCIS officer will let you know if your application has been approved and schedule you for an Oath of Allegiance ceremony. After taking the oath, you are a U.S. citizen.
U.S. citizenship offers many rights and privileges, including voting and passport eligibility. It is something you should consider pursuing, particularly if you already meet the qualifying criteria.
