Univision anchor Jorge Ramos and his five-person TV crew were briefly detained on Monday (Feb. 25) at the presidential palace in Caracas, Venezuela, during an interview with President Nicolas Maduro.
Ramos told Univision they were detained for two hours on Monday night after asking a question Maduro did not approve of. After being released, they were sent back to Miami.
“What happened was that we had an interview with (Venezuelan) leader Nicolas Maduro, and about 17 minutes into the interview he didn’t like the things we were asking him regarding the lack of democracy in Venezuela, about the torture of political prisoners and about the humanitarian crisis,” Ramos told The Hollywood Reporter.
After showing Maduro images of Venezuelans eating out of the trash to demonstrate the humanitarian crisis, Maduro got up and one of his ministers came to tell them the interview was not authorized, with the equipment to be confiscated, Ramos recalled.
“They took our cameras, kept our interview material and took all of our cellular phones,” he said.
Ramos’ phone was returned. Everything was deleted from it.
The Guardian reported that Maduro has been accused of regularly detaining journalists. Recently, he also has blocked attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Venezuela from the United States and other countries.
Venezuela is experiencing a deepening humanitarian crisis as Maduro tenuously holds onto power. In late January, Juan Guaido declared himself interim president of Venezuela and has been recognized as the legitimate leader of Venezuela by many countries, including the United States.

Ramos, equipo de Univisión liberados después de una breve detención en Venezuela
El presentador de Univisión, Jorge Ramos, y su equipo de televisión compuesto por cinco personas fueron detenidos brevemente el lunes (25 de febrero) en el palacio presidencial de Caracas, Venezuela, durante una entrevista con el presidente Nicolás Maduro.
Ramos le dijo a Univisión que fueron detenidos por dos horas el lunes por la noche después de hacer una pregunta que Maduro no aprobó. Después de ser liberados, fueron enviados de regreso a Miami.
“Lo que sucedió fue que tuvimos una entrevista con el líder (venezolano) Nicolás Maduro, y aproximadamente 17 minutos después de la entrevista no le gustaron las cosas que le preguntábamos sobre la falta de democracia en Venezuela, sobre la tortura de presos políticos y sobre la crisis humanitaria”, le dijo Ramos a The Hollywood Reporter.
Después de mostrar a Maduro imágenes de venezolanos comiendo de la basura para demostrar la crisis humanitaria, Maduro se levantó y uno de sus ministros vino a decirles que la entrevista no estaba autorizada, y que el equipo debía ser confiscado, recordó Ramos.
“Tomaron nuestras cámaras, retuvieron nuestro material de entrevistas y se llevaron nuestros celulares”, dijo.
El teléfono de Ramos fue devuelto. Todo fue borrado de él.
The Guardian reportó que Maduro ha sido acusado de detener a periodistas regularmente. Recientemente, también ha bloqueado los intentos de entregar ayuda humanitaria a Venezuela desde los Estados Unidos y otros países.
Venezuela está atravesando por una crisis humanitaria cada vez más profunda mientras Maduro se mantiene tenuemente en el poder.
