Nicole Pena Goodman (Peña Goodman in Spanish) has a philosophy that drives her work in education.
“I believe that every child can learn and should have access to a high-quality education,” she said.
A Davenport, Iowa, native whose mixture of ancestry includes Mexican grandparents and a Mexican biological father, Goodman is the principal at the Scuola Vita Nouva (SVN) Charter School in Kansas City, Missouri. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in sports administration from Simpson College, a master’s degree in administration from Lindenwood University, and a master’s degree in reading and an English as a second language endorsement from Concordia University.
Goodman also has more than 20 years of experience in education. She has taught the first, second, fifth and sixth grades. This is her ninth year at SVN. Her students help keep her motivated to continue working there.
“I believe that every child can learn, and it is my responsibility to ensure that their needs are met,” Goodman said. “I hope to inspire, encourage and empower SVN students to value and continue their education.”
Although Goodman loves her job, there are challenges she must overcome, she admitted.
“The most challenging part of my job is finding enough time to effectively run a school and build closer relationships with students, staff, families and the community,” she said.
Goodman describes herself as intrinsically motivated, passionate about breaking generational poverty, a team player and as someone who inspires others to push themselves to the next level. Her hobbies include attending sports events, and playing softball and volleyball whenever possible.
“I also enjoy working out and running,” she said. “I also like to bake and serve others.”
In observance of March as Women’s History Month, Goodman has some advice for women who want to be successful.
“Always put God first and surround yourself with other successful and positive women who are giving back to future generations,” she said. “Be your authentic self and have a growth mindset. Take time to reflect and embrace your failures. Live now and overcome your past, so you don’t miss your blessings in the future.”

Creencia de que “cada niño puede aprender” impulsa a educadora latina
Nicole Peña Goodman tiene una filosofía que impulsa su trabajo en la educación.
“Creo que cada niño puede aprender y debe tener acceso a una educación de alta calidad”, dijo.
Una nativa de Davenport, Iowa, cuya mezcla de ascendencia incluye abuelos mexicanos y un padre biológico mexicano, Goodman es la directora de la Scuola Vita Nouva (SVN) Charter School en Kansas City, Missouri. Tiene una licenciatura en educación primaria con título en administración deportiva de Simpson College, una maestría en administración de Lindenwood University y una maestría en lectura y una aprobación de inglés como segundo idioma de Concordia University.
Goodman también tiene más de 20 años de experiencia en educación. Ha enseñado los grados primero, segundo, quinto y sexto. Este es su noveno año en SVN. Sus alumnos la ayudan a mantenerse motivada para seguir trabajando allí.
“Creo que cada niño puede aprender, y es mi responsabilidad el asegurar que se satisfagan sus necesidades”, dijo Goodman. “Espero inspirar, alentar y capacitar a los estudiantes de SVN para que valoren y continúen su educación”.
Aunque Goodman ama su trabajo, admitió que hay desafíos que debe superar.
“La parte más desafiante de mi trabajo es encontrar el tiempo suficiente para dirigir una escuela de manera efectiva y establecer relaciones más estrechas con los estudiantes, el personal, las familias y la comunidad”, dijo.
Goodman se describe a sí misma como una persona intrínsecamente motivada, apasionada por romper la pobreza generacional, una jugadora de equipo y una persona que inspira a otros a avanzar al siguiente nivel. Sus pasatiempos incluyen asistir a eventos deportivos y jugar softbol y voleibol siempre que sea posible.
“También disfruto de hacer ejercicio y correr”, dijo. “También me gusta hornear y servir a otros”.
En honor a marzo siendo el Mes de la Mujer, Goodman tiene algunos consejos para las mujeres que desean tener éxito.
“Siempre pon a Dios primero y rodéate de otras mujeres exitosas y positivas que están contribuyendo a las generaciones futuras”, dijo. “Sé tu auténtico yo y ten una mentalidad de crecimiento. Tómate el tiempo para reflexionar y aceptar tus fallas. Vive ahora y supera tu pasado, para que no te pierdas tus bendiciones en el futuro”.
