How to prevent diabetes with dietary changes

Type 2 diabetes can be avoided. Or at least delayed.
Healthy lifestyle habits that include a balanced diet, regular physical activity and maintaining an average weight can prevent or delay this chronic disease – the most common type of diabetes in adults. Some dietary changes include the following:

*Eating whole-grain products: Whole grains are rich in essential vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that can help reduce the risk of diabetes. And as WebMD.com states, the fiber content in whole-grain foods can reduce the risk of heart disease – a condition that often accompanies diabetes – because it can reduce cholesterol levels.
*Avoiding processed carbohydrates: Processed carbohydrates, like white bread, white rice, mashed potatoes, donuts, muffins and many breakfast cereals, have a high glycemic index and glycemic load. Eating them can cause sustained spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, thus leading to an increased risk of diabetes.
*Reducing sugary drinks: Like refined cereals, sugary drinks such as powdered drinks, fortified fruit drinks and various juices, have high glycemic loads. Several studies show that people who drink sugary beverages are more likely to get diabetes, mainly because of weight gain.
*Eating healthy fats: The types of fats in your diet can affect the development of diabetes. Healthy fats, such as polyunsaturated fats found in liquid vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, can help prevent type 2 diabetes. Trans fats, on the other hand, can lead to type 2 diabetes.
*Limiting red meat and avoiding processed meat: Health experts recommend swapping red meat or processed red meat for a healthier protein source. Nuts, low-fat dairy products, poultry or fish are considered healthy alternatives. It also is essential to pay attention to how meat is cooked, as research indicates that people who most frequently ate meat and poultry cooked at high temperatures were 1.5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
