On Sept. 8, the world stopped for a moment.
That day, media outlets around the world reported the death of Queen Elizabeth II at age 96. Leaders around the world reacted to the queen’s passing, sending condolences to her family.
Proclaimed queen in February 1952 at age 25, Elizabeth II holds the record for longest reign by a female head of state and longest reign of any British monarch at 70 years, 214 days. Taking the throne after the death of her father, King George VI, Elizabeth II was the queen of Great Britain and 14 commonwealth realms at the time of her death. The commonwealths included Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica.
Elizabeth II is being succeeded by her son Charles.
As National Public Radio and other media outlets reported, the queen’s funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. British Summer Time (5 a.m. Central Daylight Time) Sept. 19 at Westminster Abbey. As multiple media outlets have reported, it’ll be the first time since 1760 for a funeral for a British monarch to take place there. George II was the last one to have his funeral there.
Several heads of state have confirmed they’ll attend the queen’s funeral. They include U.S. President Joe Biden; King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain; Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan; King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands; King Philipe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium; and the heads of state of Brazil, Italy, Germany and Israel.
Elizabeth II’s remains are expected to be buried at King George VI Memorial Chapel, where her husband, parents and sister are resting.
