Dating back to 2008, the Cincinnati and Kansas City NFL franchises have met eight times, including three times in 2022. Cincinnati has won seven of those eight. The latest was Sunday (Dec. 4), when the Bengals rallied to edge the Chiefs 27-24 at Paycor Stadium.
“A hard-fought game,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said to open his postgame press conference. “The Bengals did a nice job; and coming down the stretch, you can’t turn the ball over against a good team – and you surely can’t miss a field goal.”
The turnover and missed field Reid referred to both in the fourth quarter. The turnover was a fumble following a pass from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II to tight end Travis Kelce. With the Chiefs leading 24-20 and facing second-and-8 from their own 26-yard line, Mahomes threw over the middle to Kelce at the Kansas City 34. Kelce reached the Kansas City 45, where linebacker Germaine Pratt ripped the football from him as he looked to continue gaining yardage while protecting the ball and breaking Pratt’s grip and that of safety Jessie Bates III.
Pratt recovered the fumble, setting up Cincinnati’s 10-play, 53-yard, game-changing drive. Quarterback Joe Burrow’s 8-yard TD pass to Chris Evans and Evan McPherson’s extra-point kick capped the drive with 8 minutes, 54 seconds remaining.
On their next possession, the Chiefs attempted to reclaim the lead with a touchdown or at least secure a game-tying field goal by driving from their own 25 into Cincinnati territory. Facing fourth-and-7 from the Cincinnati 37, they opted to attempt the field goal.
Harrison Butker’s 55-yard attempt went wide right. Taking over from their own 45 with 3:19 left, the Bengals ran out the clock to secure the three-point victory – their third straight three-point win over Kansas City. Cincinnati edged Kansas 34-31 on Jan. 2 at Paycor on a McPherson field goal as time expired, then spoiled the Chiefs’ bid for a third straight Super Bowl appearance by defeating them 27-24 in overtime Jan. 30 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in the AFC championship game.
The latest win was a “good win,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor told reporters.
“This is what we visualized the entire week,” Taylor said. “I know a lot’s (been) made (of this) because they’re a tremendous football team, we (have) got a lot of respect for them. We’re a tremendous football team as well – and … this team’s playing as well as I’d hoped we’d be playing right here in early December.”
The Chiefs (9-3) will look to rebound from their latest loss to Cincinnati this Sunday (Dec. 11), when they face Denver in AFC West action at Empower Field at Mile High. The Bengals (8-4 and winners of four straight) will look to build on their latest nail-biting win over Kansas City this Sunday, when they host AFC North rival Cleveland.
