Flu cases on the rise

By Chara
Flu season is here.
Last week, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 20,000 people in the United States were hospitalized to be treated for the flu. The CDC also is reporting around 4,500 flu-related deaths from this season.
As the National Institute on Aging and other sources have stated, flu symptoms include a fever, chills, coughing, a sore throat, a runny nose, muscle aches, headaches and fatigue. Some flu patients also experience vomiting and diarrhea.
Typically, a case of the flu lasts about five days. However, it can last up to two weeks and cause life-threatening complications, including pneumonia; and inflammation of the heart, brain and other organs.
A flu virus can spread quickly. It can spread if someone sneezes or coughs and someone else breathes in the virus. It also can be transmitted if someone touches a place where the virus is present or has physical contact with someone with the virus.
Health care experts advise people to get an annual flu shot to reduce the chances to catching the flu. They also advise people who feel like they’ve caught the flu to visit a doctor immediately to get some antiviral medication; however, the flu can be treated at home by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water and broth, and by taking over-the-counter medications.
