Like many women, singer and mother Sol Machado is battling breast cancer.
And like many women, Machado is drawing on community support to give her the strength to fight.
Being diagnosed with cancer brought fear and anxiety, Machado acknowledged. And the disease has brought logistical and financial challenges, such navigating the U.S. health care system. And taking on those challenges has resulted in some frustrations for the Kansas City area resident, such as being denied medical care.
“I wasn’t treated because I didn’t have insurance, even though they told me that I needed immediate treatment,” she said. “But they didn’t give me the treatment because I didn’t have health insurance.”
With the denial of treatment adding emotional, mental and financial strain on Machado, she and her family are relying heavily on community support, she said.
“I think, ‘Thank you, God, for putting these people in my path and thank you, cancer,’” Machado said. “Thank you because I never imagined how many people were willing to help me. It might be because of the diagnosis, which is quite heavy with that word ‘cancer,’ or because they really appreciate Sol Machado. In this case, I see it as they love me, they value me because there are so many, many messages, calls and very kind comments toward me.”
Machado has received financial and emotional community support. People from all walks of life have reached out, ranging from close friends and family to strangers, she said.
In addition, Machado’s loved ones have provided critical support, being there for her every step of the way, she said. One way Machado has received support from her family and friends is through her family history. She’s the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. Her mother’s survival story provides a constant reminder of the possibility of overcoming even the most challenging obstacles, she said.
Machado hopes to be an inspiration to other women, just as her mother is for her. She’s using her experience as a platform to encourage all women to get regular checkups and be proactive concerning their health. And after overcoming her illness, she hopes to use her journey to support and inspire other women in the community, she said.

Cantante y madre latina lucha contra el cáncer de mama
Como muchas mujeres, la cantante y madre Sol Machado está luchando contra el cáncer de mama.
Y como muchas mujeres, Machado está recurriendo al apoyo de la comunidad para darle la fuerza para luchar.
Ser diagnosticada con cáncer trajo miedo y ansiedad, reconoció Machado. Y la enfermedad ha traído desafíos logísticos y financieros, como navegar el sistema de salud de EE.UU. Afrontar esos desafíos ha resultado en algunas frustraciones para la residente del área de Kansas City, como ser rechazada para atención médica.
“No fui tratada porque no tenía seguro, aunque me dijeron que necesitaba tratamiento inmediato”, dijo. “Pero no me dieron el tratamiento porque no tenía seguro médico”.
Con la negación del tratamiento sumando al estrés emocional, mental y financiero en Machado, ella y su familia están dependiendo en gran medida del apoyo de la comunidad, dijo.
“Pienso, ‘Gracias, Dios, por poner a estas personas en mi camino y gracias, cáncer’”, dijo Machado. “Gracias porque nunca imaginé cuántas personas estaban dispuestas a ayudarme. Puede ser por el diagnóstico, que es bastante pesado con esa palabra ‘cáncer’, o porque realmente aprecian a Sol Machado. En este caso, lo veo como que me aman, me valoran porque hay tantos, tantos mensajes, llamadas y comentarios muy amables hacia mí”.
Machado ha recibido apoyo financiero y emocional de la comunidad. Personas de todos los ámbitos de la vida se han acercado, desde amigos cercanos y familiares hasta extraños, dijo.
Además, los seres queridos de Machado han brindado un apoyo fundamental, estando allí para ella en cada paso del camino, dijo. Una forma en que Machado ha recibido apoyo de su familia y amigos es a través de su historia familiar. Pues la mexicana es hija de una sobreviviente de cáncer de mama. La historia de supervivencia de su madre es un recordatorio constante de la posibilidad de superar incluso los obstáculos más desafiantes.
Machado espera ser una inspiración para otras mujeres, así como su madre lo es para ella. Está usando su experiencia como plataforma para alentar a todas las mujeres a realizarse chequeos regulares y ser proactivas con respecto a su salud. Y después de superar su enfermedad, espera usar su trayectoria para apoyar e inspirar a otras mujeres en la comunidad.
