The first major winter storm of 2024 has arrived in the Kansas City area — and with it, opportunities to go sledding.
There are many sledding hills for area residents to consider. To prepare for the next big snow, KCUR-FM (89.9) has posted an article with a list of sledding hills across the area. Reprinted from its Adventure newsletter, the list includes the following:
*Gillham Park: Youngsters will find the small slopes near the baseball field of this Kansas City, Missouri, space to be ideal, the article states. Located at 41st and Gilliam in Hyde Park.
*Blue Valley Park: Located at 2301 Topping Ave. in Kansas City, Missouri, this park features a 400-foot-long hill.
“But a word of caution: Be careful not to slide into trees or roads,” the article advises.
*Westwood Park: Located in Kansas City, Missouri’s Westwood neighborhood, the park is a popular sledding spot with slopes that are “appropriate for all ages,” the article states. It also features two shelters for staving off the cold.
*Penn Valley Park: Also located in Kansas City, Missouri, the article recommends this park for older kids because of the potential hazards, which include trees and a lake. Located at West 28th and Wyandotte, and 31st Street and Southwest Trafficway.
*Mackay Hall at Park University: The hill on which Mackay Hall sits provides a view of the Missouri River, located nearby. The address is 8700 N.W. River Park Drive, Parkville, Missouri.
*Stump Park: Located at 4751 Woodland Drive in Shawnee, Kansas, this park offers a couple of hills deemed excellent for sledding. One of them “has a steep grade that might be best for older kids,” as stated in the article. But the park also has another slope better suited for the younger kids.
Other recommended sledding spots include Stubby Park, located on Poplar Street in Leavenworth, Kansas; “near the Memorial Chapel” at Fort Leavenworth, also in Kansas; and Waterworks Park, located at Waterworks Road and North Oak Trafficway in Kansas City, Missouri.
