Chiefs punch ticket to fourth Super Bowl in five seasons
A few clutch defensive stops and a clutch reception by Kansas City Sunday (Jan. 28) helped the Chiefs add another Lamar Hunt Trophy to their collection.
And by winning that trophy, the Chiefs have the chance to win another trophy: the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The Chiefs (14-6) secured the Lamar Hunt Trophy by edging Baltimore 17-10 for the AFC title at M&T Bank Stadium – their fourth AFC title in five seasons. It’s also the fourth conference title in five seasons for Kansas City coach Andy Reid.
“My hat goes off to the Ravens and the city here of Baltimore,” Reid told reporters during his postgame press conference. “You’ve got a great football team. We appreciated your hospitality. It’s a great environment to play in. And then, how about the Chiefs?”
By winning the title, the Chiefs advanced to play San Francisco Feb. 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the Super Bowl, the NFL’s annual championship game. The 49ers (14-5) claimed the NFC title by rallying from a 17-point halftime deficit for a 34-31 victory over Detroit Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
Kansas City’s defense forced three turnovers en route to winning the franchise’s latest AFC title, including two during the fourth quarter inside the 20-yard line (a.k.a., “the red zone”). The first occurred on the quarter’s opening play. With the Chiefs leading 17-7 and Baltimore facing second-and-8 at the Kansas City 9, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson threw a short pass to wide receiver Zay Flowers, who darted toward the goal line and lunged, hoping to score a touchdown.
He didn’t.
Inside the Kansas City 1, Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed popped the football loose. The ball tumbled into the Kansas City end zone, where cornerback Trent McDuffie recovered it, giving the Chiefs possession.
The Chiefs forced the next turnover on Baltimore’s next possession. Facing second-and-10 at the Kansas City 25, Jackson threw for the end zone, looking to connect with tight end Isaiah Likely in triple coverage. Safety Deon Bush intercepted the ball.
“We had some opportunities out there. … Just got to take advantage of them,” Jackson told reporters. “Can’t turn the ball over … – fumble, interception, stuff like that.”
After forcing Kansas City to punt away its next possession, the Ravens made it a seven-point ballgame by staging a nine-play, 29-yard scoring drive, capped by Justin Tucker’s 43-yard field goal with 2 minutes, 34 seconds remaining. The Chiefs responded by running out the clock.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling helped the Chiefs run out the clock. With 2:19 remaining and the ball at the Kansas City 46, quarterback Patrick Mahomes II connected with Valdes-Scantling on a 32-yard, third-and-9 pass play, giving Kansas City a first down.
“I kind of blacked out everything else around me,” Valdes-Scantling said when interviewed by KMBC-TV (Channel 9) in the locker room. “I didn’t see the defender, I didn’t see the fans, I didn’t see any of the other players. I just saw the football and that was it.”
With the Ravens out of timeouts, Mahomes took a knee on three straight snaps to end it.
The Chiefs will face a familiar foe in Super Bowl LVIII. San Francisco and Kansas City met in Super Bowl LIV, with the Chiefs winning 31-20.
