Kansas City coach Andy Reid and his Chiefs are looking to do something no NFL franchise has done in roughly 20 years when they face San Francisco Sunday (Feb. 11) in Las Vegas, Nevada: win back-to-back Super Bowls.
With information provided by multiple sources, here’s a look at the two teams playing in Super Bowl LVIII:
*Teams: Kansas City Chiefs (14-6, home, AFC champion); San Francisco 49ers (14-5, visitor, NFC champion).
*Super Bowl journey: After going 8-3 through their first 11 regular-season games, the Chiefs went 3-3 through their final six regular-season games. One of those last three wins occurred New Year’s Eve at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, when Harrison Butker booted six straight field goals to help the Chiefs rally to defeat Cincinnati 25-17 and clinch their eighth straight AFC West Division title.
Seeded third in the AFC playoffs, Kansas City grabbed its second straight AFC title and fourth in five seasons with wins over Miami, Buffalo and Baltimore.
Sparked by a 5-0 start, the 49ers finished their regular season 12-5. They also finished as NFC West champions – their second straight divisional title and 22nd overall.
Seeded first and with homefield advantage in the NFC playoffs, the 49ers reached the Super Bowl with back-to-back comeback victories. Trailing 21-14 entering the fourth quarter, they rallied to defeat Green Bay 24-21 Jan. 20. In the NFC title game, they overcame a 24-7 halftime deficit to defeat Detroit 34-31.
*Super Bowl/championship history: This marks the second time Kansas City and San Francisco have faced each other in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs rallied to defeat San Francisco 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV.
The Chiefs are seeking to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since New England pulled off the feat by winning Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX. Coincidentally, one team New England defeated in pulling off the repeat feat was the Philadelphia Eagles, who were then coached by Reid.
Kansas City is making its sixth Super Bowl appearance and fourth since its original league, the AFL, merged with the NFL. The Chiefs represented the AFL in two Super Bowls pre-merger, falling 35-10 to Green Bay in Super Bowl I and cruising past Minnesota 23-7 in Super Bowl IV.
After defeating San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs fell to Tampa Bay 31-9 in Super Bowl LV. They overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat Philadelphia 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII and put themselves in position for a repeat.
Before the Super Bowl era, the franchise also won the AFL title in 1962, when it was called the Dallas Texans – one season before relocating and being renamed the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 49ers are seeking their sixth Super Bowl title and their first since January 1995, when they thumped the then-San Diego Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX. Before Super Bowl XXIX, they won Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII and XXIV. They’ve lost in their other two appearances. They fell to Baltimore 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII before their loss to Kansas City.
