Busy with church activities? Off to soccer practice? Gotta cook dinner, bath time, bedtime rinse, and repeat. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day challenges of just surviving with any family; now only imagine that the privilege I have only to worry about those things and not whether or not, I return to my children tomorrow because my employer was raided by ICE. Sadly today, ICE raids across the country should serve as a good reminder, that some of us carry a level of privilege that creates an opportunity to be more active, more vocal and more likely to be involved in the protection of our neighbors and broad Latino community members. The Trump administration is clearly focused and unrelenting on the pursuit of targeted deportation tactics towards the Latino community.
First and foremost, the raid at Liberty, Missouri shows us that they’re unstoppable, emboldened, and willing to lie directly about the intent of enforcement actions. The 12 individuals that were detained (the Liberty 12) were there working a normal shift at a restaurant, not violent criminals as suggested by Trump as the only targets of raids. They were family members, breadwinners and one a grandmother of families that depended on them and planned on them being home after their shift. These types of hardworking folks are currently the backbone of nearly everything that we consume or enjoy; go on vacation-cleaning staff likely immigrants, go to the grocery store to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables-likely picked and packed by immigrants, want to enjoy a meal out with the family-often cooked by hardworking immigrants in the kitchens with dishes washed by the same. Americans will celebrate with us on Cinco de Mayo, enjoy movies like Coco and Encanto but fail to acknowledge the hardworking, family oriented, and giving nature of Latino people. They easily fall into the red-hat, cadre of critics that believe every Latino is illegal, “stealing” jobs, and violently leading drug smuggling efforts within our community.
That reality must be challenged, and it should be challenged by us-3rd and 4th generation Latinos who watched the generations before us struggle and work tirelessly to provide the best for their families. It is our responsibility, particularly those with legal status, third and fourth generations, who may be comfortable without thinking about legal status, to speak up. My great grandfather came to this country to work and earn a living for his family. He later would fight in World War II, earning a purple heart for his valiant and heroic efforts, but only through that did he earn his legal status. His sacrifices and the sacrifices of the generations before me, of hardworking laborers, with an unrelenting work ethic, and desire to be more successful than the last generation, is the only reason why I exist, with a college education and this title of Jackson County legislative. What makes me and my family’s story different than that of any one of the Liberty 12?
We as a community of Latinos in the greater Kansas City, Metropolitan area must stand up for each other, regardless of generation, regardless of the language that we speak, regardless of the status of our presence, we must STAND UP. We must fight back! You should care about what’s happening to the rule of law and our democracy in the United States right now, because ICE is coming for all of us-regardless of our status. In Liberty, ICE targeted the kitchen, targeted employees and lied about their intent. The 4th Amendment of the US Constitution protects us from “unreasonable searches and seizures by the government..guaranteeing the right to be secure, in your person, home, papers, and belongings”. Knowing and understanding your rights are incredibly important. But no one is going to stand up for them but YOU. As Latinos we have the passion and power within us and we must rise up, unite and fight back against this tyrannical administration that’s dead set on taking as much as they can.
To my Latino Familia, who may be undocumented or from mixed status families, you should plan for the worst and pray for the best. The best thing you can do is have a plan. Talk to your family. Make sure if you have assets, you have a bank account, you own property, cars or businesses that someone with legal status is on those accounts to ensure that you have access to these things if for some reason you are picked up and detained by ICE. Make sure that you talk to family members who can take care of your family on your behalf so that if something tragic occurs, your family is protected. Your kids will be picked up after school. You have a plan, and you’re not caught off guard and unprepared. You should talk to your Consul General’s office and familiarize yourself with their offerings and make sure you have a good immigration attorney on file-not a notario.
To my 3rd and 4th generation or full citizen neighbors and friends, you must use your voices to fight for our broader community. Don’t claim to “love our culture”, and then abandon our people. It was not long ago that Ellis welcomed immigrants from other lands, yearning to “breath free” in America. This country has always been a nation of immigrants, but the next wave of immigrants needed in this land shouldn’t be subjected to the lack of humane, inequitable, immigration laws that make it impossible to do this the “right way”. Instead, we should acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of these amazing populations, willing to literately walk across countries to fight for a better life for their families; willing to sacrifice it all just to have a better life for their families.
Debemos Levantarnos

¿Ocupado con las actividades de la iglesia? ¿Va a la práctica de fútbol? Tiene que cocinar la cena, la hora del baño, el enjuague antes de acostarse y repetir. Es fácil perderse en los desafíos diarios de simplemente sobrevivir con cualquier familia; ahora solo imagine el privilegio que tengo de preocuparme solo por esas cosas y no por si vuelvo o no con mis hijos mañana porque ICE hizo una redada en mi empleador. Lamentablemente, hoy, las redadas de ICE en todo el país deberían servir como un buen recordatorio de que algunos de nosotros tenemos un nivel de privilegio que crea una oportunidad para ser más activos, más vocales y más propensos a participar en la protección de nuestros vecinos y de los miembros de la comunidad latina en general. El gobierno de Trump está claramente enfocado e implacable en la búsqueda de tácticas de deportación dirigidas hacia la comunidad latina.

Esa realidad debe ser desafiada, y nosotros, los latinos de tercera y cuarta generación que vimos a las generaciones anteriores luchar y trabajar incansablemente para brindar lo mejor a sus familias, debemos hacerlo. Es nuestra responsabilidad, particularmente aquellos con estatus legal, tercera y cuarta generación, que pueden sentirse cómodos sin pensar en el estatus legal, alzar la voz. Mi bisabuelo vino a este país para trabajar y ganarse la vida para su familia. Más tarde lucharía en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, ganándose un corazón púrpura por sus valientes y heroicos esfuerzos, pero solo a través de eso ganó su estatus legal. Sus sacrificios y los sacrificios de las generaciones anteriores a mí, de trabajadores esforzados, con una ética de trabajo incansable y el deseo de ser más exitosos que la última generación, es la única razón por la que existo, con una educación universitaria y este título de legislador del condado de Jackson. ¿Qué hace que mi historia y la de mi familia sean diferentes a la de cualquiera de los 12 de Liberty?
Nosotros, como comunidad de latinos en el área metropolitana de Kansas City, debemos defendernos unos a otros, sin importar la generación, sin importar el idioma que hablemos, sin importar el estatus de nuestra presencia, debemos LEVANTARNOS. ¡Debemos contraatacar! Debería importarte lo que está sucediendo con el estado de derecho y nuestra democracia en Estados Unidos en este momento, porque ICE viene por todos nosotros, independientemente de nuestro estatus. En Liberty, ICE apuntó a la cocina, apuntó a los empleados y mintió sobre su intención. La Cuarta Enmienda de la Constitución de EE.UU. nos protege de “registros e incautaciones irrazonables por parte del gobierno… garantizando el derecho a estar seguro, en su persona, hogar, papeles y pertenencias”. Conocer y comprender sus derechos es increíblemente importante. Pero nadie los defenderá excepto USTED. Como latinos, tenemos la pasión y el poder dentro de nosotros y debemos levantarnos, unirnos y contraatacar a esta administración tiránica que está empeñada en tomar todo lo que pueda.
A mi familia latina, que puede ser indocumentada o de familias de estatus mixto, deben planificar para lo peor y orar por lo mejor. Lo mejor que pueden hacer es tener un plan. Hablen con su familia. Asegúrese de que si tienen bienes, tienen una cuenta bancaria, son dueños de propiedades, automóviles o negocios, alguien con estatus legal esté en esas cuentas para asegurarse de que tengan acceso a estas cosas si por alguna razón son recogidos y detenidos por ICE. Asegúrese de hablar con miembros de la familia que puedan cuidar de su familia en su nombre para que si ocurre algo trágico, su familia esté protegida. Sus hijos serán recogidos después de la escuela. Ustedes tienen un plan y no los tomarán desprevenidos y sin preparación. Deben hablar con la oficina de su Cónsul General y familiarizarse con sus ofertas y asegurarse de tener un buen abogado de inmigración en el archivo, no un notario.
A mis vecinos y amigos de tercera y cuarta generación o ciudadanos, deben usar sus voces para luchar por nuestra comunidad en general. No digan que “aman nuestra cultura” y luego abandonen a nuestra gente. No hace mucho tiempo que Ellis dio la bienvenida a inmigrantes de otras tierras, que anhelaban “respirar libremente” en Estados Unidos. Este país siempre ha sido una nación de inmigrantes, pero la próxima ola de inmigrantes que se necesita en esta tierra no debería estar sujeta a la falta de leyes de inmigración humanas e inequitativas que hacen imposible hacerlo de la “manera correcta”. En cambio, deberíamos reconocer y celebrar las contribuciones de estas poblaciones asombrosas, dispuestas a caminar literalmente a través de los países para luchar por una vida mejor para sus familias; dispuestas a sacrificarlo todo solo para tener una vida mejor para sus familias.
