When a Greater Kansas City area family calls the Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) after a loved one is detained by immigration agents, most families have no plan in place, the organization said.
A plan should include essential, easily accessible documents, including bank accounts, powers of attorney designations, birth certificates, ID cards and an immigration attorney’s contact information or details of an ongoing case, the AIRR told Dos Mundos.
The organization also recommends that families learn their rights in detention, decide in advance what the person detained would want to pursue and save money for the possibility of being detained.
The recommendations follow a summer of intensified immigration law enforcement. KCUR-FM (89.3) reported recently that at least 30 people were arrested in the area during the men’s World Cup and that eight workers were detained July 9 at a food manufacturing warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri.
The AIRR told Dos Mundos the detention calls it responds to are concentrated in specific parts of the area. Olathe was the area’s hot spot for immigration enforcement in 2025 and remains one, the organization said. This year, it has been joined by the Northeast neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri; and the northeast side of Kansas City, Kansas, around Central Avenue, Parallel Parkway and The Legends entertainment district, the AIRR said.
Families who live in or commute through those areas should prioritize preparation, the group said, both by making a plan and by learning their rights inside and outside detention.
For families facing a current detention, the AIRR outlined three immediate steps to take. They consist of locating the person detained, contacting a trusted or community-recommended immigration attorney for a consultation, and — once the person is located — learning how to deposit money into the detainee’s commissary account so the person who’s detained can communicate with family members.
When asked what it needs most from Dos Mundos readers who want to help, the AIRR pointed not to donations, but rather, to people.
“AIRR needs impacted leaders ready to take action,” the organization stated.
The organization relies on the community to verify reports of enforcement activity and said the most common gap in those reports is location. Thus, volunteers need to know the size of an operation, what federal law enforcement agents are doing, the exact address, what the agents are wearing, the time and what equipment the agents are carrying, the organization stated. Callers often describe a general area instead.
“One time, a report said that ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) was in Overland Park, but Overland Park is huge,” the organization stated.

AIRR pide a las familias del área a tener un plan antes de que ocurra una detención
Cuando una familia del área metropolitana de Kansas City llama a Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) después de que un ser querido es detenido por agentes de inmigración, la mayoría no cuenta con un plan, indicó la organización.
Un plan debe incluir documentos esenciales y de fácil acceso, entre ellos información de cuentas bancarias, poderes notariales (powers of attorney), actas de nacimiento, identificaciones y los datos de contacto de un abogado de inmigración o los detalles de un caso en curso, expresó AIRR a Dos Mundos.
La organización también recomienda que las familias conozcan sus derechos durante una detención, decidan de antemano qué querría hacer la persona detenida y ahorren dinero ante la posibilidad de una detención.
Las recomendaciones llegan tras un verano de mayor actividad de las autoridades migratorias. KCUR-FM (89.3) informó recientemente que al menos 30 personas fueron arrestadas en el área durante la Copa Mundial masculina y que ocho trabajadores fueron detenidos el 9 de julio en una bodega de manufactura de alimentos en Kansas City, Missouri.
AIRR contó a Dos Mundos que las llamadas por detenciones que atiende se concentran en zonas específicas del área. Olathe fue el punto más activo de operativos migratorios en 2025 y sigue siéndolo, señaló la organización. Este año se han sumado el vecindario Northeast, en Kansas City, Missouri; y el sector noreste de Kansas City, Kansas, en los alrededores de Central Avenue, Parallel Parkway y el distrito de entretenimiento The Legends, dijo AIRR.
Las familias que viven o transitan por esas zonas deberían dar prioridad a la preparación, manifestó el grupo, tanto elaborando un plan como aprendiendo cuáles son sus derechos dentro y fuera de la detención.
Para las familias que enfrentan una detención en curso, AIRR describió tres pasos inmediatos: localizar a la persona detenida, contactar a un abogado de inmigración de confianza o recomendado por la comunidad para una consulta y, una vez localizada la persona, averiguar cómo depositar dinero en su cuenta de comisaría (commissary) para que pueda comunicarse con sus familiares.
Al preguntársele qué necesita más de los lectores de Dos Mundos que quieran ayudar, AIRR no habló de donaciones, sino de personas.
“AIRR necesita líderes afectados que estén listos para actuar”, declaró la organización.
El grupo depende de la comunidad para verificar reportes de operativos y dijo que el dato que más falta en esos reportes es la ubicación. Por eso, los voluntarios necesitan saber la magnitud del operativo, qué están haciendo los agentes federales, la dirección exacta, cómo van vestidos, la hora y qué equipo llevan, precisó la organización. Con frecuencia, quienes llaman describen solo una zona general.
“Una vez, un reporte decía que ICE (Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de Estados Unidos) estaba en Overland Park, pero Overland Park es enorme”, declaró la organización.
