The Missouri Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) recently celebrated the graduation of its first Spanish-language cohort in the Growth360 program.
On July 30, a cohort of 22 participants in the entrepreneur education program, one of many offered by the Missouri SBDC, graduated after 10 weeks of training. The graduation included strategic business presentations and cohorts’ goals for the next three years.
There have been five cohorts to complete Growth360 training since the program was launched in 2025, including the first fully offered in Spanish. Before the latest cohort, Growth360 offered materials in English and Spanish, according to what the participants preferred.
The focus on Spanish speakers was in response to an initiative started years ago to serve the growing number of Latino businesses in the Greater Kansas City area, said Jill Hathaway, regional director of the Missouri SBDC at UMKC.
“I had the opportunity to have a few partners and write a grant with Kauffman (the Kauffman Foundation) two years ago; and so, we were awarded a capacity grant that allowed us to take existing material that we have and have it translated, as well as bring on contractors and staff to be able to work with us in translating and facilitating the program,” Hathaway said.
The program has had more than 90 Latino businesses go through it. Hathaway said she is excited to see where the businesses of the latest cohort go.
“Our coaching does not end at all, and so, they will continue being coached as they need it,” she said. “Once you are a client within our Small Business Development Center, you are always a client, no matter what business you have; and no matter where you are in your business, you can always reach out to us and get help.”
