The Kansas City Royals hosted their first “Strike Out slavery” event on Aug. 17.
In partnership with Strike Out Slavery, the festival, which started at 4:15 p.m. and went until the start of the Royals-New York Mets game at Kauffman Stadium, was designed to raise awareness about human trafficking.
During the festival, baseball fans could interact with global and local non-profits that are fighting against human trafficking and pick up important safety information. They also could take part in family-friendly activities and giveaways.
About a quarter of the 28,627 people at the game stuck around afterward to enjoy a free postgame concert featuring Lauryn Hill, a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and rapper.
Strike Out Slavery is an organization founded by Deidre and Albert Pujols. Albert Pujols, who was born in the Dominican Republic, played high school and junior college baseball in the Kansas City area. He has played in the major leagues since 2001 – first with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he won two World Series; then with the Los Angeles Angels, where he has played since 2012.
“There is a big disconnect between the fact that people know these kinds of things happen and what can they do about it,” Deidre Pujols told KMBC-TV (Channel 9). “We are trying to give them access to all these organizations and the people on the front line who need help.”
