Pinatas (piñatas in Spanish) have been a longtime icon of Mexican culture, and they hold a special meaning for the holidays.
Marco Polo discovered pinatas in China. During the 14th century, when they made their way into Europe, they were adapted to Christian celebrations.
But pre-Hispanic pinatas also have Aztec roots. During their celebrations around what has become the Christmas season, they used to build clay vases and sculptures in honor of their gods. Spaniards fused those pre-Hispanic traditions with their Catholic traditions. Pinatas were part of that cultural fusion.
The traditional pinata is made with a clay vase on the inside. On the outside, it has seven peaks that represent the seven deadly sins. Usually, the pinata is broken with a wooden pole that symbolizes the force of God. As a sign of faith, people’s eyes are covered as they swing at the pinata. The pinata is filled with candies and fruit that represent the gifts for overcoming sin.
With the holidays approaching, making a pinata can provide an opportunity to connect with your family and nurture creativity at home. You will need scissors, masking tape, white craft glue, crepe paper of various colors, a star-shaped balloon, seven colored birthday party hats, one cup of flour, water a mixing bowl, a paintbrush, some string and old newspapers.
Blow up the balloon and put the party hats on the tip of the star and both front sides of the balloon. Attach them with the masking tape.
Pour the white flour and the water into the mixing bowl and whisk them together.
Cut the newspaper into pieces and cover the pieces with the flour-water mix. Rub off any excess liquid. Then, cover the balloon with the pieces of newspaper. Let it dry for about two hours.
Once the cover is dry and hard, cut a candy hole at the top of the balloon. Cut the crepe paper into small pieces to decorate the pinata. Make paper fringes by making small cuts in the crepe paper.
Mix the white glue with some water. Apply the glue with the paintbrush on the balloon covered with newspaper. Glue the paper fringe and decorate the pinata.
Finally, make two small holes with a pin on each side of the top part. Put the string inside the small holes. Fill the pinata and cover the big hole with crepe paper.
Las piñatas han sido un ícono de la cultura mexicana desde hace mucho tiempo, y tienen un significado especial para las celebraciones.
Marco Polo descubrió las piñatas en China. Durante el siglo XIV, cuando llegaron a Europa, se adaptaron a las celebraciones cristianas.
Pero las piñatas prehispánicas también tienen raíces aztecas. Durante sus celebraciones en torno a lo que se ha convertido en la temporada navideña, solían construir jarrones de arcilla y esculturas en honor a sus dioses. Los españoles fusionaron esas tradiciones prehispánicas con sus tradiciones católicas. Las piñatas fueron parte de esa fusión cultural.
La piñata tradicional está hecha con un jarrón de arcilla en el interior. En el exterior, tiene siete picos que representan los siete pecados capitales. Por lo general, la piñata se rompe con un palo de madera que simboliza la fuerza de Dios. Los ojos de las personas se cubren mientras golpean la piñata, como señal de fe. La piñata está llena de dulces y frutas que representan los dones para vencer el pecado.
Con las celebraciones acercándose, hacer una piñata puede brindar la oportunidad de conectar con su familia y fomentar la creatividad en el hogar. Necesitará tijeras, cinta adhesiva, pegamento blanco para manualidades, papel crepé de varios colores, un globo con forma de estrella, siete sombreros de fiesta de cumpleaños de colores, una taza de harina, agua, un tazón para mezclar, un pincel, algunas cuerdas y periódicos viejos.
Explota el globo y pon los sombreros de fiesta en la punta de la estrella y en ambos lados frontales del globo. Pegalos con la cinta adhesiva.
Vierta la harina blanca y el agua en el tazón y mezcle.
Corta el periódico en tiras y cúbrelos con la mezcla de harina y agua. Quité cualquier exceso de líquido. Luego, cubra el globo con trozos de periódico. Déjalo secar durante unas dos horas.
Una vez que la cubierta esté seca y dura, corta un agujero de caramelo en la parte superior del globo. Corta el papel crepé en trozos pequeños para decorar la piñata. Haz flecos de papel haciendo pequeños cortes en el papel crepé.
Mezcla el pegamento blanco con un poco de agua. Aplique el pegamento con el pincel sobre el globo cubierto con papel de periódico. Pega la franja de papel y decora la piñata.
Finalmente, haga dos pequeños agujeros con un alfiler a cada lado de la parte superior. Ponga la cuerda dentro de los pequeños agujeros. Llena la piñata y cubra el agujero grande con papel crepé.
