Dec. 12 is a big holiday for many Hispanic Catholics.
That day marks the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a popular Catholic feast that celebrates the appearance of the Virgin Mary, also the patron saint of Mexico, to peasant Juan Diego Dec. 9-12, 1531. Every year, Catholics in Mexico and the United States celebrate the day with multiple events.
This year, many Catholic institutions around the Kansas City area are celebrating the holiday with novenas and gatherings. Here’s a list of events:
*All Saints Parish (811 Vermont Ave.; Kansas City, Kansas): On Sunday (Dec. 3), the parish started hosting a novena. It will end with the traditional fiesta in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12. The fiesta includes a rosary, Mass, singing “Las Mananitas” (“Las Mañanitas” in Spanish) and a community gathering.
*Church of the Holy Cross (8311 W. 93rd St.; Overland Park, Kansas): The celebration will start on the evening of Dec. 11 with a 6 p.m. rosary in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The celebration will continue until midnight, when “Las Mananitas” will be played.
*Our Lady of Unity Parish (2910 Strong Ave.; Kansas City, Kansas): A novena began Sunday. It will run through Dec. 11. At 5:30 p.m. Dec 11, celebrations will start with a procession behind the St. John the Evangelist Church, followed by a rosary. The celebrations will continue with dancing and singing to honor the Virgin Mary until a midnight Mass is celebrated and there’s a gathering in the church basement. In addition, there will be a noon Mass on Dec. 12, followed by a dance. Another celebration will take place at 6 p.m. with the rosary prayer, followed by a Mass and a dance.
*Blessed Sacrament Church (2203 Parallel Ave.; Kansas City, Kansas): A novena began Sunday. It will run through Dec. 11. The nightly novena begins at 7 p.m. On Dec. 11, there will be a celebration after the rosary prayer.
*St. Mark Catholic Church (3736 S. Lee’s Summit Road; Independence, Missouri): The celebration in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 9. It will include a Mass and dinner.
Iglesias católicas hispanas se preparan para celebrar a la Virgen de Guadalupe
El 12 de diciembre es un gran día festivo para muchos católicos hispanos.
Ese día marca la Fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe, una fiesta católica popular que celebra la aparición de la Virgen María, también patrona de México, al campesino Juan Diego del 9 al 12 de diciembre de 1531. Cada año, los católicos en México y Estados Unidos celebra el día con múltiples eventos.
Este año, muchas instituciones católicas del área de Kansas City están celebrando la festividad con novenas y reuniones. Aquí hay una lista de eventos:
*Parroquia de Todos los Santos (811 Vermont Ave.; Kansas City, Kansas): El domingo (3 de diciembre), la parroquia comenzó a organizar una novena. Terminará con la tradicional fiesta en honor a la Virgen de Guadalupe el 12 de diciembre. La fiesta incluye un rosario, misa, canto de “Las Mañanitas” y una reunión comunitaria.

A las 5:30 p.m. del 11 de diciembre, las celebraciones comenzarán con una procesión detrás de la Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista, seguida de un rosario. Las celebraciones continuarán con bailes y cantos en honor a la Virgen María hasta que se celebre una misa de medianoche seguida una reunión en el sótano de la iglesia. *Iglesia Católica San Marcos (3736 S. Lee’s Summit Road; Independence, Missouri): La celebración en honor a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se llevará a cabo a las 6 p.m. del 9 de diciembre. Incluirá una misa y una cena.
