In 1981, Manuel Reyes took a leap of faith.
That year, Reyes and his wife Clara established Dos Mundos. Now based in Kansas City, Kan.,
the now-weekly bilingual newspaper is celebrating its 36th anniversary of serving the Kansas City area’s Hispanic community this month.
“I worked as a welder for a long time,” Reyes recalled recently. “That’s when Clara was working as a realtor and came (up) with the idea of starting a newspaper in English and Spanish. I always supported her, but I had my other job.”
Starting the newspaper wasn’t easy, Reyes admitted.
“We didn’t know anything about (the) newspaper (business),” he said. “We started reading about it and … (talked) to people that had more understanding about the newspaper industry (than we did).… We had friends who would write articles in English, others who wrote in Spanish. We had people who … (volunteered) and helped us distribute the paper every week – and even had someone that would help us on the accounting part.”
The first editions were produced in the Reyes family’s basement, with the help of relatives and friends. Gradually, interest in the paper grew, allowing Dos Mundos to eventually set up shop on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Mo., where it was based for many years.
Reyes said he and his wife received help from the community and from various associations in the nation as they grew their business, including media-oriented organizations.
“We were … part of the National Association of Hispanic Publications,” Reyes said. “This association would give conferences or would teach us how to promote the paper or how to write more interesting articles…. Their help and the help from the companies who believed in us … (are) why we are here today.”
As Manuel and Clara Reyes grew the business and learned more about the trade, they made sure to stay focused on their main motivation for running their newspaper: to help people settling in the Kansas City area better understand the culture and live better lives here.
“It was hard,” he said. “There was a time where we couldn’t make ends meet, using every penny we had to sustain the paper. But knowing that we were helping hispanic families and bridging the gap for those coming into a new culture made us continue with it.”

El atrevimiento de Reyes sigue cosechando recompensas 36 años después

El periódico bilingüe ahora semanal celebra su aniversario número 36 de servir a la comunidad hispana del área de Kansas City este mes.
«Trabajé como soldador durante mucho tiempo», recordó Reyes recientemente. «Fue entonces cuando Clara trabajó como agente de bienes raíces y llegó con la idea de crear un periódico en inglés y español. Siempre la apoyé, pero tenía mi otro trabajo.”
Reyes admitió que empezar el periódico no fue fácil.
“No sabíamos nada del (negocio de) periódico,” dijo. “Empezamos a leer sobre esto y … hablamos con personas que tenían más entendimiento sobre la industria periodística (que nosotros) … Teníamos amigos que escribían artículos en inglés, otros que escribían en español. Teníamos gente que … (se ofreció) y nos ayudó a distribuir el periódico cada semana – e incluso tenía a alguien que nos ayudara en la parte de la contabilidad.”
Las primeras ediciones se produjeron en el sótano de la familia Reyes, con la ayuda de parientes y amigos. Poco a poco, el interés en el papel creció, permitiendo Dos Mundos eventualmente establecer un sitio en Southwest Boulevard en Kansas City, Mo., donde se operó durante muchos años.
Reyes dijo que él y su esposa recibieron ayuda de la comunidad y de varias asociaciones en la nación a medida que creció su negocio, incluyendo organizaciones orientadas a los medios de comunicación.
“Éramos … parte de la Asociación Nacional de Publicaciones Hispanas,” dijo Reyes. “Esta asociación daba conferencias o nos enseño cómo promover el periódico y cómo escribir artículos más interesantes …. Su ayuda y la ayuda de las empresas que creyeron en nosotros … (son) la razón por la qué estamos aquí hoy.”
Mientras que Manuel y Clara Reyes crecieron el negocio y aprendieron más sobre el comercio, se cercioraron de permanecer centrados en su motivación principal para funcionar su periódico: ayudar a la gente que viene al área de Kansas City a que entienda mejor la cultura y viva mejor sus vidas aquí.
“Fue duro,” dijo. “Hubo un tiempo en que no lográbamos llegar a fin de mes, utilizábamos cada centavo que teníamos para mantener el periódico. Pero sabiendo que estábamos ayudando a las familias hispanas y superando la brecha para aquellos que entran en una nueva cultura nos hizo continuar.”
