On March 12, Congress members Lucille Royce-Allard (D-Cal.), Nydia Velasquez (D-NY) and Yvette Clarke (D-NY) introduced the Dream and Promise Act to provide a pathway to citizenship for three groups of immigrants whose protections were stripped away by Donald Trump.
The Dream and Promise Act builds upon the Dream Act, which was previously passed by the House of Representatives under Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The bill marks a sea of change in immigration policy in the Trump era: protecting immigrants without hurting immigrants.
The bill would provide a pathway to citizenship to over two million people, including immigrant youth and beneficiaries of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED) programs. It would allow Dreamers to apply for legalization and TPS holders to apply for green cards.
Alex Martinez, from the Kansas/Missouri Dream Alliance (KSMODA), said the organization fully supports this bill.
“The Dream and Promise Act offers the most extensive protection of immigrants and families in our community since the Trump administration took office,” he said in a press release. “While Trump’s anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric have done irreparable harm, this bill is far more inclusive than previous bills and will ensure that immigrant families can continue to contribute to our communities as they work, pursue education, and support their families.”
The bill will likely pass the Democrat-led House, but it will have a harder time in the Republican-led Senate.
