What Our Lady of Guadalupe means to Hispanics depends on who you ask about her.
Recently, Dos Mundos asked some Hispanics what Our Lady of Guadalupe means to them. Here are their answers:
“My love for Our Lady of Guadalupe is really big. In fact, it only takes … (seeing) her image or … (hearing) her name and my whole self gets infatuated with love. She’s my role model as a woman, mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend. She’s my guide in every important decision, my comfort in the stressful moments and my happiness in the joyful ones. I talk with her every day and ask her to look after my family. I think that, for me, having her in my life means everything.”

“Our Lady of Guadalupe … (is) really important for the community because she brought together Spaniards and indigenous people. I think that Mexico became a nation due to her appearance. Thanks to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the indigenous understood God’s message. Later, her influence expanded around Latin America. … (On) her day (Dec. 12), people around the world, rich and poor, come together to honor her. Her influence … (is so) powerful that some atheists are also her followers.”

“Family is really important for Hispanics. I think that we can thank Our Lady of Guadalupe for that value. Her appearance came to show us that believing in the mother of … (Jesus) can help us get out of our darkest places. I think that praying to this motherly figure gives us a sense of protection. For me, the Lady of Guadalupe … (is) as important as my biological mother because I think that their love and protection … (are) the same. … In fact, I think they are one.”

“Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the many appearances of the Virgin Mary – all (of them) with the purpose of helping us get to heaven. Even though there have been many appearances around the world, the church recognizes the Lady of Guadalupe one (in 1531 in Mexico) as one of the most important. I think that her appearance came when the community needed it the most. Her maternal love chooses our nation to be the place to show her message of unification and love in difficult times.”

“For me, Our Lady of Guadalupe … (is) not only the mother of Jesus, but also mine. She came … (in) a fundamental, compassionate and merciful image. Her quote, ‘Am I not here who … (is) your Mother?’ (written in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe), is the best representation of the motherly figure that she became for America. Later, in the history of our independence (in Mexico), Miguel Hidalgo took her image as a symbol of unification and fraternity.”

Recientemente, Dos Mundos les preguntó a algunos hispanos qué significa para ellos la Virgen de Guadalupe. Aquí están sus respuestas:
“Mi amor por la Virgen de Guadalupe es realmente grande. De hecho, sólo tengo que ver su imagen o escuchar su nombre y todo mi ser se llena de amor. Ella es mi modelo a seguir como mujer, madre, esposa, hermana, hija y amiga. Ella es mi guía en cada decisión importante, mi consuelo en los momentos estresantes y mi felicidad en los felices. Hablo con ella todos los días y le pido que cuide a mi familia. Creo que, para mí, tenerla en mi vida significa todo”.

“Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe … es realmente importante para la comunidad porque reunió a españoles e indígenas. Creo que México se convirtió en una nación debido a su aparición. Gracias a la Virgen de Guadalupe, los indígenas entendieron el mensaje de Dios. Más tarde, su influencia se expandió alrededor de América Latina. En su día (12 de diciembre), personas de todo el mundo, ricas y pobres, se unen para honrarla. Su influencia … es tan poderosa que algunos ateos también son sus seguidores”.

La Virgen Señora de Guadalupe es una de las muchas apariciones de la Virgen María, todas con el propósito de ayudarnos a llegar al cielo. Aunque ha habido muchas apariciones en todo el mundo, la iglesia reconoció a la Virgen de Guadalupe en 1531 en México como una de las más importantes. Creo que su aparición vino cuando la comunidad más lo necesitaba. “Su amor maternal elige a nuestra nación como el lugar para mostrar su mensaje de unificación y amor en tiempos difíciles”.

“Para mí, la Virgen de Guadalupe no es sólo la madre de Jesús, sino también la mía. Ella vino … en una imagen fundamentalmente compasiva y misericordiosa. Su frase, “¿No estoy yo aquí, que soy tu madre?” (Escrita en la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), es la mejor representación de la figura maternal en que se convirtió para América. Más tarde, en la historia de nuestra independencia (en México), Miguel Hidalgo tomó su imagen como un símbolo de unificación y fraternidad”.
