Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has riled up the head of the U.S. Border Patrol.
During a live stream on Instagram, the Democratic congresswoman from New York commented on the immigration facilities along the southern border.
“The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are – they are concentration camps,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Carla Provost, Border Patrol chief, called Ocasio-Cortez’s comment “offensive” during a recent hearing.
“My men and women, as well as the men and women in (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), are doing the best that they can with the limited resources that they have,” Provost was quoted by The Hill and other media outlets as saying.
In addition, Provost said Border Patrol agents are bringing toys to children and buying them with their own money.
“Agents are bringing in clothes; they’re feeding babies; they’re going above and beyond, day in and day out, to try to care for these individuals to best of their ability,” Provost was quoted by CNN and other media outlets as saying. “And this is not what they were trained (for) or what they signed up … to do.”
Provost was not the only one who found Ocasio-Cortez’s comments offensive. Several Republican lawmakers were reportedly upset, too.
The congresswoman used Twitter to defend her comment.
“We are calling these camps what they are because they fit squarely in an academic consensus and definition,” she tweeted. “History will be kind to those who stood up to this injustice. So say what you will. Kids are dying and I’m not here to make people feel comfortable about that.”
Although Ocasio-Cortez has been criticized, she has the support of others, including an Overland Park, Kansas, resident, who spoke to Dos Mundos on the condition of anonymity.
“Her comments were strong, and maybe we can’t compare the Border Patrol facilities with the things that were lived (through) during the Holocaust,” the resident said. “However, the reality is that there are children in cages that are not with their parents and are dying. I support her views and I hope the government takes action.”

Provost no fue la única que encontró ofensivos los comentarios de Ocasio-Cortez. Según informes, varios legisladores republicanos también estaban molestos.
La congresista usó Twitter para defender su comentario.
“Llamamos a estos campamentos lo que son porque encajan perfectamente en un consenso y definición académicos”, tuiteó. “La historia será amable con los que hicieron frente a esta injusticia. Así que di lo que quieras. Los niños se están muriendo y no estoy aquí para que la gente se sienta cómoda con eso”.
Aunque Ocasio-Cortez ha sido criticada, cuenta con el apoyo de otros, incluido un residente de Overland Park, Kansas, quien habló con Dos Mundos en condición de anonimato.
“Sus comentarios fueron fuertes y quizás no podemos comparar los centros de la Patrulla Fronteriza con las cosas que se vivieron durante el Holocausto”, dijo el residente. “Sin embargo, la realidad es que hay niños en jaulas que no están con sus padres y están muriendo. Apoyo sus puntos de vista y espero que el gobierno actúe”.
