Let me tell you the story of my cousin Betty.
My cousin, Bertha Velazquez (nicknamed “Betty”), has been a woman that has fought hard in life. She has always met her goals with honesty. She has been in the education field. She is a single mother who has dedicated her life completely to her only true love, her daughter.
It hasn’t been easy in these hard days, being a single mother and giving her daughter an education. In addition, a dramatic change to their lives came in June 2020, when Betty suddenly started bleeding.
Immediately, she was taken to the emergency room, where doctors did all the necessary tests. A few days later, she received the doctor’s call giving her the most devastating news she could receive: She had cancer of the cervix and uterus without metastasis.
Betty received chemotherapy and radiation treatment for one year. The radiation treatments caused her to be burned and have blisters all over her body. She got a hysterectomy removing her uterus, cervix and ovaries. She became cancer-free in July 2021.
But the fight goes on.
Unfortunately, in April, Betty started bleeding. This time, there was more bleeding than the previous time and with an excruciating pain in her lower abdomen and rectum. She immediately went to the emergency room, where she received bad news again: She had a massive blood clot in her bladder, along with a sizable tumor.
Then, Betty received more bad news.
Betty learned her cervical cancer had returned, but in a more aggressive way, now with metastasis in the stomach and kidney damage. She had to undergo chemotherapy treatment again. She also had to undergo a nephrostomy, an opening made between the kidney and the skin of the back to allow her urine to drain into a bag, which she has to carry with her and empty every time she needs to use the restroom.
Because of the location of the tumor in the bladder, in September, Betty suffered more devastating news. The doctor told her she would have to undergo another nephrostomy – this one for her right kidney, leaving her even more disabled in her daily life.
Her nightmare continued. In October, Betty began having an uncontrollable pain in her belly and rectum that increased in intensity as the days passed, leaving her unable to have a bowel movement for days. As a result, she was taken to the hospital again. She underwent several tests to find the cause. She learned the position of the tumor in her bladder was pressing on the rectum, leaving no possibility for stools to come out.
Doctors had to make another drastic decision that would end up plunging Betty into total depression: She had to undergo a colostomy.
After two nephrostomies and a colostomy, Betty will have to continue this tremendous battle against cancer in total depression and financial helplessness.
Betty is no longer able to work in the profession she loves because of the cancer she suffers from. She has severe incontinence, permanent severe pain from the disease and the side effects of the treatment. She’s totally helpless financially and without health insurance. She suffers from deep depression and anxiety. Losing her hair for the second time was devastating for her as well.
We all know cancer is exorbitantly taxing, not only physically and mentally, but also financially. Although insurance covered a portion of the medical costs the first time, the second time has been difficult for her because she’s without a job and a medical insurance.
Betty still needs to pay her rent. Betty still needs to pay her medical and hospital bills. She still needs to pay for all her personal expenses, medications, a lot of necessities during and after the treatment, and many house expenses.
For this reason, we family members have dared to create a fundraising campaign on Betty’s behalf. From the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate your support and generosity during this difficult time. Betty Velázquez: La batalla continúa
Déjenme contarles la historia de mi prima Betty.
Mi prima, Bertha Velázquez (a la que le decimos Betty), ha sido una mujer que ha luchado mucho en la vida. Siempre ha cumplido sus metas con honestidad. Ella ha estado en el campo de la educación. Es una madre soltera que ha dedicado su vida por completo a su único amor verdadero, su hija.
No ha sido fácil en estos días difíciles, el ser madre soltera y darle una educación a su hija. Además, en junio de 2020 se produjo un cambio dramático en sus vidas, cuando Betty de repente comenzó a sangrar.
De inmediato, la llevaron a la sala de emergencias, donde los médicos le hicieron todos los exámenes necesarios. A los pocos días, recibió la llamada del médico que le dio la noticia más devastadora que podía recibir: tenía cáncer de cuello uterino y útero sin metástasis.
Betty recibió quimioterapia y radioterapia durante un año. Los tratamientos de radiación le provocaron quemaduras y ampollas por todo el cuerpo. Se sometió a una histerectomía para extirparle el útero, el cuello uterino y los ovarios. La declararon libre de cáncer en julio de 2021.
Pero la lucha continúa.
Desafortunadamente, en abril, Betty comenzó a sangrar. Esta vez, hubo más sangrado que la vez anterior y con un dolor insoportable en la parte inferior del abdomen y el recto. Inmediatamente fue a la sala de emergencias, donde recibió malas noticias nuevamente: tenía un coágulo de sangre masivo en la vejiga, junto con un tumor considerable.
Entonces, Betty recibió más malas noticias.
Betty se enteró de que su cáncer de cuello uterino había regresado, pero de una manera más agresiva, ahora con metástasis en el estómago y daño renal. Tuvo que volver a someterse a un tratamiento de quimioterapia. También tuvo que someterse a una nefrostomía, una abertura que se hace entre el riñón y la piel de la espalda para permitir que la orina drene en una bolsa, que tiene que llevar consigo y vaciar cada vez que necesita ir al baño.
Debido a la ubicación del tumor en la vejiga, en septiembre Betty sufrió una noticia más devastadora. El médico le dijo que tendría que someterse a otra nefrostomía, esta vez en el riñón derecho, lo que la dejaría aún más incapacitada en su vida diaria.
Su pesadilla continuó. En octubre, Betty comenzó a tener un dolor incontrolable en el abdomen y el recto que aumentaba en intensidad a medida que pasaban los días, dejándola incapaz de defecar durante días. Como resultado, la llevaron nuevamente al hospital. Se sometió a varias pruebas para encontrar la causa. Se enteró de que la posición del tumor en su vejiga estaba presionando el recto, sin posibilidad de que salieran las heces. Los médicos tuvieron que tomar otra decisión drástica que terminaría sumiendo a Betty en una depresión total: tuvo que someterse a una colostomía.
Después de dos nefrostomías y una colostomía, Betty deberá continuar esta tremenda batalla contra el cáncer en total depresión y en una crisis económica.
Betty ya no puede trabajar en la profesión que ama debido al cáncer que padece. Tiene incontinencia severa, dolor severo permanente por la enfermedad y los efectos secundarios del tratamiento. Está totalmente indefensa económicamente y sin seguro médico. Ella sufre de una profunda depresión y ansiedad. Perder su cabello por segunda vez también fue devastador.
Todos sabemos que el cáncer es exorbitantemente exigente, no solo física y mentalmente, sino también financieramente. Aunque el seguro cubrió una parte de los costos médicos la primera vez, la segunda vez ha sido difícil para ella porque no tiene trabajo ni seguro médico.
Betty todavía tiene que pagar su alquiler. Todavía tiene que pagar sus facturas médicas y de hospital. Todavía tiene que pagar todos sus gastos personales, medicamentos, muchas necesidades durante y después del tratamiento y muchos gastos de la casa.
Por esta razón, los familiares nos hemos atrevido a crear una campaña de recaudación de fondos a nombre de Betty.
