Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI) is hosting its annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta.
Presented by CommunityAmerica Credit Union, this year’s fiesta features an extra day, running May 3-5 at GCI’s headquarters, located at 1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez in Kansas City, Missouri.
“It’ll be three days over the Cinco de Mayo weekend,” said Nancy Rivera, GCI communications and outreach coordinator.
As the GCI website states, the attractions over that weekend will include a petting zoo, folkloric dancing and music acts. Artists Jay Perez (May 3), Sonora Skandalo (May 4), and Mike Gonzalez & The Iconiczz (May 5) will be the main headliners.
The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is advertised as the first original fiesta in the Greater Kansas City area. It started in 1922, as a way to “preserve the culture and bring home a Mexican celebration that many of these immigrants probably did not have once they made it here to Kansas City,” as Rivera explained.
The fiesta is free and open to the public. Rivera sees it as a fiesta for the community.
“We come together to celebrate with music, food and dances that honor the homeland,” she said.
GCI is still seeking event volunteers. Volunteer shifts will be three hours each. Volunteers will get reserved parking at the Tony Aguirre Community Center, a food and drink voucher, and a complimentary volunteer T-shirt the day they volunteer.

Los Centros Guadalupe Inc. (GCI) está organizando su Fiesta anual del Cinco de Mayo.
Presentado por la CommunityAmerica Credit Union, la fiesta de este año tendrá un día extra, del 3 al 5 de mayo en la sede de GCI, ubicada en 1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez en Kansas City, Missouri.
“Serán tres días durante el fin de semana del Cinco de Mayo”, dijo Nancy Rivera, coordinadora de comunicaciones y extensión de GCI.
Las atracciones durante ese fin de semana incluirán un zoológico de mascotas, bailes folclóricos y actos musicales. Los artistas Jay Perez (3 de mayo), Sonora Skandalo (4 de mayo) y Mike González & The Iconiczz (5 de mayo) serán los artistas principales.
La Fiesta del Cinco de Mayo se anuncia como la primera fiesta original en el área metropolitana de Kansas City. Comenzó en 1922, como una manera de “preservar la cultura y traer a casa una celebración mexicana que muchos de estos inmigrantes probablemente no tuvieron una vez que llegaron aquí a Kansas City”, como explicó Rivera.
La fiesta gratuita y abierta a todo público. Rivera lo ve como una fiesta para la comunidad.
“Nos reunimos para celebrar con música, comida y bailes que honran a la patria”, dijo.
GCI todavía busca voluntarios para el evento. Los turnos de voluntariado serán de tres horas cada uno.
